Adobe Inc. will end its effort to create a web design product to rival Figma Inc. after the collapse of its proposed $20 billion acquisition of the startup.
When it agreed to buy Figma, which helps users design app and website interfaces, Adobe put its competing program XD in “maintenance mode,” ceasing to launch new features or sell it individually. The deal to purchase Figma fell apart under regulatory pressure in December and the creative software giant hadn’t announced whether it would resurrect XD or attempt to build another competitor.
“We have no plans to further invest in it,” a spokesperson said Tuesday of XD.
Figma had trounced Adobe’s XD in recent years. Adobe General Counsel Dana Rao said in 2022 that XD only made about $17 million a year in standalone annual recurring revenue and had 19 developers on staff.
With billions of dollars that would have gone toward Figma freed up, some Wall Street analysts wondered whether Adobe would attempt to build another competing product design app. The spokesperson said the company is open to exploring partnerships with other companies in the space.
“We are focused on the opportunity we have across imaging, photography, design, web, animation and 3D, as well as Express and Firefly” the spokesperson said. Adobe has been integrating artificial intelligence features, and its proprietary Firefly model, into its suite of creative software.

Light bulbs have an enormous, everyday impact on the way our homes look and feel, and with a flood of new energy efficient LED bulbs filling the lighting aisle, you’ve got more LED lighting options than ever. Plus, an LED light bulb can help you save on your energy bills and electricity. But how do you pick the best LED lights for the job? The trick is to think for a long time about how you typically put light to use in the different rooms in your home. That, more than anything, will dictate your lighting needs.
For instance, you might benefit from a super bright bulb in your favorite reading lamp, but prefer a gentler, more candle-like warm glow from the lamp at your bedside.
To that end, here are some room-specific tips to help you zero in on the right LED light for your lamps and living space. Where appropriate, I’ve also included links to buy light bulbs from our tests. I’ll keep this updated as I test new products.
Contents
Lots of height? Make it super bright
If you have rooms with high ceilings or recessed lighting — an entryway, for instance, or maybe a staircase with overhead lights or a candelabra up above — you’ll want to prioritize brightness over softness in your light bulbs. After all, the higher up your light bulbs are, the brighter they’ll need to be in order to light up the room.
The most common products for overhead lighting are BR30-shaped floodlights. The “BR” stands for “bulging reflector,” and it means that the light inside the bulb sits above a reflective bowl, sort of like a little satellite dish. Screw a bulb like that up into your ceiling, and that bowl will catch all of the upward cast light, then reflect it back down and out the bottom, which bulges outward to produce the widest possible pool of bright light across the room. It’s the same trick your car’s headlights use to produce as much light output as possible out in front of you as you drive.
You’ve got plenty of energy saving BR30-shaped LED options in the lighting aisle. The most common choice among them are 65-watt replacement bulbs that typically put out about 650 lumens of light each. That’s a good, average number, and fine for average-height ceilings with at least a few bulbs shining overhead. Among the ones I’ve tested, 65-watt replacement floodlights from Cree and Philips are the two I’d recommend. They’re good values and they’re highly energy efficient for the money (each draws less than 10 watts). These dimmable bulbs also work well with dimmer switches and — most important for overhead lighting — they’re both nice and bright, each putting out comfortably more than 700 lumens. As of writing this, Home Depot has those Cree bulbs on sale in a two-pack for less than $6 — they’re the ones I’d go with in my own home if it were me buying.
If your ceilings are higher than average, or if you’ve got fewer bulbs shining overhead than you’d like, then look for 100-watt bulb replacement BR30 LEDs that bump the brightness up even further. Cree makes them, and Home Depot is selling them for a little over $10 each, which is a pretty good deal.
Dimmability means versatility for your living room and bedroom
Some rooms serve just one or two basic functions, but other rooms get used in all sorts of ways. For instance, you might use your living room for watching TV, reading books, playing board games with the kids, or any other number of activities. Rooms like that can really benefit from quality lights that can adapt to whatever’s going on.
The old-fashioned way to do it is to use a mix of different lamps and fixtures that serve different purposes — a reading lamp beside your favorite armchair, overhead lights for board game night, everything off when you’re watching a movie, and so on. That’s all well and good, but it limits you to a binary, “on/off” lighting mentality.
The better approach? Give yourself a full spectrum of lighting possibilities by making sure all of those lights are dimmable.
Upgrading your light switches to dimmer switches is one way to do it (and not nearly as intimidating as you might be thinking if you’ve never switched one out before). There are also smart plugs from brands like Lutron that’ll let you dim your fixtures and lamps up and down. The easiest way, however, is simply to replace your bulbs with dimmable smart bulbs. It’s a great time to do it — costs have come way down in recent years, and the advent of voice controls has given people a quick, easy way to jump to whatever dimmer setting they like, whenever they like.
Best of all, just about every smart bulb on the market is dimmable without flickering or buzzing, eliminating a common headache that comes with an in-wall dimmer switch. That also makes smart bulbs quality picks for bedrooms, where strong dimming performance and things like prescheduled wake-up fades can do wonders for your mood in the morning.
Philips Hue has an expensive reputation, but its dimmable white light LED smart bulbs only cost $15 each, and you can get a starter kit with three bulbs and the Philips Hue Bridge that acts as the brain of the system for just $60. From there, you can pick up an additional bulb whenever they go on sale, gradually building out your network of connected bulbs.
We like the Philips Hue smart light bulb because of the well-developed app, the strong variety of bulbs, fixtures and accessories you can add to your setup, and the good track record of support. With the Hue Bridge calling the shots, your bulbs will work with Siri, Alexa and the Google Assistant for quick, voice-activated lighting changes. Next time you’re watching a movie and want the lights dimmed down low, but not totally off, you can just tell your assistant of choice to “dim the living room lights to 5%.”
Consider colors in your kitchen and your closet
I’m not talking about color-changing smart lights (though if you want to jazz your home up with them, don’t let me stop you). No, I’m talking about the colors that are already in your home — artwork, furniture, the clothes in your closet, the fruits and veggies in your kitchen, you name it.
Whatever it is, if it’s colorful, then it’ll benefit from light bulbs with high color rendering scores — bulbs that boost the color temperature and help colors look their best. This isn’t always the easiest thing to shop for, as manufacturers aren’t required to list their color rendering scores on the packaging, like they are with brightness and efficiency specs. Some bulbs that do claim to emit great colors are actually just so-so.
My LED lighting tip: Just stick with GE Reveal bulbs, because after about six years of reviewing light bulbs for CNET, I’ve yet to test one that hasn’t delivered on its promise of better-looking colors. That includes standard 60-watt replacement LEDs, floodlights, weird-looking stick-shaped LEDs, dimmable LED bulbs and more. A 4-pack of regular, A-shaped Reveal bulbs (linked below) currently goes for $17 at Lowe’s.
They tend to cost slightly more per bulb, and most are a little less bright than the average LED light because they filter out some of excess yellow light for a better color temperature — but those compromises are worth it if you’re using them for accent lighting or to light up the spots in your home where you’ll appreciate accurate, better-looking colors day in and day out.
And that’s really the point — despite regularly taking them for granted, we use light bulbs more than just about anything else in our homes. They’re often the first things we turn on in the morning and the last things we turn off before going to bed. So don’t let the lighting aisle overwhelm you — whether you choose an energy saving light bulb, a CFL bulb, a smart LED bulb or even a regular incandescent light bulb, finding the right light for each room in your house is well worth it, and much easier than you might think.

I loved the sleek silhouette and wood grain accents of this Lasko tower fan. It was also the third-quietest fan that I tested, measuring just a few decibels noisier than the Honeywell. On top of that, it features Bluetooth, which lets you control the oscillating fan via an app on your phone.
The problem is that the app is all you get as far as remote controls are concerned. That isn’t ideal for a shared space, as the fan can only connect with one device at a time. In other words, if someone else pairs with the fan, your connection gets cut.
That might be forgivable if the app offered advanced features like voice controls or the ability to set a custom schedule, but it doesn’t. You can turn it on and off, turn the oscillation feature on and off, adjust among three speed settings or start the sleep timer — the same controls as you’ll find on the fan itself. And, while it doesn’t ask for any permissions aside from Bluetooth access, the app doesn’t seem to offer a privacy policy at all. All of that makes this Lasko fan easy to skip at $80.
Vornado V-Flow Air Circulator Tower Fan
Ry Crist/CNET
The Vornado V-Flow tower fan features a neat-looking build that twists the fan’s grille around the cylindrical base. It’s one of the best-looking tower fans I tested — but it doesn’t oscillate like a traditional tower fan, relying instead on that twisty design to move a wider field of air throughout the room.
It worked well enough in my tests when I had it aimed at me, but coverage varied at those side angles, where the airstream is positioned lower or higher due to that diagonal grille. The bigger issue was that the Vornado V-Flow was the noisiest fan I tested, ringing in at 50 decibels on the highest of its three speeds from a distance of 30 inches. On top of that, my remote wouldn’t work, which echoes frustrations I’ve seen from user reviews at retailers where the V-Flow is sold. That, plus a lack of features beyond the usual sleep timer, has me saying no thanks to Vornado’s $70 price tag here (and I’d probably skip it during a sale, too). That’s a shame, as Vornado’s five-year warranty was the best among all of the fans I looked at for this roundup, and more than twice as long as you get with the $550 Dyson TP04.
AmazonBasics Oscillating 3-Speed Tower Fan
Ry Crist/CNET
Amazon continues to sell a growing variety of products under its AmazonBasics brand and these days that includes a tower fan. Like the name suggests, it isn’t anything too fancy. The remote batteries don’t come included, but you at least get a couple of natural wind settings on top of the typical low, medium and high speed settings.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have a good experience testing this fan out. For starters, my remote stopped working shortly after I began my tests and the fan itself came out of its flimsy base after I’d hauled the thing back and forth between my bedroom and living room a few times. The 35W power draw was the lowest of all the fans I tested, but I felt that lack of power in the form of an underwhelming stream of air, even at the highest setting. At $60, this tower fan might be selling for twice as much as it’s worth.
Unfortunately, most tower fans won’t work very well with smart plugs.

Google Messages chat colours feature
According to a Thespandroid report, tipster Assemble Debug spotted a new feature in the latest beta update of Google Messages – the ability to set custom chat colours. Google announced this feature back in December but there was no information about its rollout. Now, it seems like the tech giant is finally rolling it out with the Google Messages beta update titled, “messages.android_20240125_01_RCO0.phone.openbeta_dynamic”.
Using this feature, users can choose from 9 colours for chats. Once a colour is selected, a “Jon Doe changed the theme” text appears in the chosen colour. The report states that users can set custom chat colours in both individual as well as group chats. It is important to note that this feature only works in RCS messages and not normal SMS. Moreover, it is only available to the beta testers and not to the public.

Photomoji in Google Messages
The platform also recently rolled out another feature called Photomoji. It allows users to turn their favourite photos into expressive reactions and stickers. If you’ve been using Google Messages, you will soon be able to explore this exciting upgrade. To use this feature, simply open Google Messages and navigate to the compose field. There you will find a circular badge over the emoji button. This will indicate that Photomoji is active on your device.

Lava Blaze Pro 5G Review: In a market largely influenced by Chinese smartphone giants, Indian consumers have become accustomed to seeing brands like Vivo, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Realme dominating the mid-range segment even as the South Korean major, Samsung, keeps spicing up the space with its amazing smartphones. However, amidst this landscape, Lava, a homegrown tech company, has been striving to carve out its space in this fiercely competitive arena. Introducing the Lava Blaze Pro 5G, their latest addition to the 5G segment in India, the company aims to challenge the established players in the sub Rs. 15000 smartphone market – the space that has the most competition.
Having used the Lava Blaze Pro 5G for over a month, I set out to explore whether Lava has done enough to compete with well-established rivals like Oppo and Redmi. In this comprehensive review, I will unravel the capabilities and shortcomings of the Lava Blaze Pro 5G, helping you make an informed decision in this confusing and cluttered smartphone landscape.

Lava Blaze Pro 5G Review: Design and Display
The Lava Blaze Pro 5G comes with a plastic frame and back that has a smooth matte finish, making it resistant to fingerprints and smudges. However, It weighs 203 grams and is 8.96mm thick. Despite its larger size, the phone feels comfortable to hold with a good grip.
The buttons, including the fingerprint sensor on the power button, are located on the right side. Throughout my exploration of the Lava Blaze Pro 5G, the fingerprint sensor consistently delivered swift and accurate unlocks on the first attempt. A single speaker resides at the bottom, providing an average audio experience that might leave some desiring more volume. On a positive note, the inclusion of a 3.5mm headphone jack caters to those who prefer wired earphones.
The front of the device showcases a 6.78-inch IPS LCD display, delivering an FHD plus resolution of 1080 x 2460 pixels, 396 PPI, and an impressive 120Hz refresh rate. The display, characterised by vibrant colours and remarkable viewing angles, proves to be a satisfying visual experience. Whether indulging in binge-watching sessions of diverse shows and films, the Lava Blaze Pro 5G consistently met expectations and considering the price point, the display holds its own without disappointment.
However, it’s important to note that the brightness levels fall slightly below par, causing challenges in reading and viewing content under intense sunlight. On the upside, the 120Hz refresh rate contributes to the fluidity of scrolling and other actions, enhancing the overall user experience.
Lava Blaze Pro 5G Review: Performance
Fueling the Lava Blaze Pro 5G is the formidable MediaTek Dimensity 6020 Processor harmonised with 8GB of LPDDR4x RAM, up to 8GB of virtual RAM, and a capacious 128GB of storage. In my hands-on experience with the Lava Blaze Pro 5G, the device exhibited commendable performance in day-to-day usage. Minor stutters in system animations were noted, but overall, the performance left little room for complaints. Notably, the default animation speed is set to 0.5x, enhancing the device’s snappiness.
On the other hand, with a few customised features on top, it operates on Android 13. While the Settings app and other features are custom-built, the notification shade and app drawer are taken from Stock Android.
It’s disappointing that the phone ships pre-installed with the August 2023 security patch. However, on the positive side, the phone comes with almost no third-party apps pre-installed.
When it comes to gaming, however, expectations need to be tempered, as handling heavyweight titles like BGMI or Asphalt 9 proves challenging. Playing BGMI on full graphics settings led to intermittent lag, accompanied by minor heating issues after around 40 minutes of gameplay. Additionally, data transfer via the in-built Nearby Share proved to be a test of patience, taking approximately 30 minutes to send 2GB of data to another phone. Despite these limitations, the Lava Blaze Pro 5G adeptly manages day-to-day tasks such as Instagram scrolling and web browsing without a hitch.
Lava Blaze Pro 5G Review: Camera Performance
The Lava Blaze Pro 5G boasts a dual rear setup featuring a 50MP primary camera accompanied by an AI camera, while the front houses an 8MP camera. Despite a variety of modes in the camera application, such as Film, Slow Motion, and Pro mode, the overall camera performance is middling.
While the shutter lag is well-managed, the colour reproduction appears lacklustre, and the dynamic range falls below par. On the upside, the detailing in captured images is commendable. Portrait shots showcase robust edge detection, yet adjusting the background blur intensity proved less effective. Nonetheless, the detailing and colour accuracy in portraits outshine regular shots.
Selfies from the front-facing camera disappoint, lacking in detail, plagued by noise, and exhibiting poor dynamic range, particularly against bright backgrounds. Even under artificial and low lighting, photos tend to be overly soft, sacrificing detail for reduced noise.
The challenge persists in night shots, with Night mode offering increased exposure but not compensating adequately in terms of detailing and overall sharpness. The Lava Blaze Pro 5G struggles to deliver compelling performance in low-light conditions, leaving room for improvement in its camera capabilities.
Lava Blaze Pro 5G Review: Battery Life
Diving into the battery performance of the Lava Blaze Pro 5G, this device is equipped with a robust 5,000mAh battery complemented by 33W fast charging capabilities. With moderate usage, encompassing activities such as running social media apps, making calls, browsing, and indulging in binge watching sessions, the smartphone effortlessly sails through the day.
During my usage, I clocked close to 4 hours of screen-on time, showcasing the device’s endurance under typical scenarios. However, pushing the device with heavier usage scenarios may lead to a drained battery before the day concludes. An aspect worth noting is the somewhat disappointing charging time, as the device takes nearly 1 and half hours to charge from 0 to 100 percent with the provided charger.
Lava Blaze Pro 5G: Final Verdict
I find the Lava Blaze Pro 5G to be a commendable mid-range contender in the sub Rs. 15000 smartphone market. The design, though a bit bulky, offers a comfortable grip with responsive buttons and a reliable fingerprint sensor. The 6.78-inch display impresses with vibrant colours and a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, but struggles in bright sunlight.
Performance-wise, the MediaTek Dimensity 6020 processor ensures smooth day-to-day tasks, but gaming enthusiasts may find it lacking. The camera setup disappoints with mediocre colour reproduction, subpar dynamic range, and weak low-light performance. On the bright side, the 5,000mAh battery provides satisfactory endurance, but the 33W fast charging disappoints with a longer charging time.
In short, the Lava Blaze Pro 5G offers a decent package, but improvements in camera capabilities and charging speed would elevate its standing in the competitive mid-range market. However, if you’re searching for a smartphone in the sub-midrange, the Lava Blaze Pro 5G might be your best bet. You can also consider Redmi 13C and Realme Narzo 60X 5G.
