Elon Musk’s Neuralink carries out its first human brain chip implant; everything you need to know

0
Elon Musk’s Neuralink has started to ‘mess’ with people’s heads – literally! The neurotechnology company has announced that it has performed its first human brain implant just months after it reportedly received interest from thousands of applicants. Neuralink received FDA approval last year for conducting human trials, and now, the first test has been carried out.

In an X post on Tuesday, Musk announced, “The first human received an implant from @Neuralink yesterday and is recovering well. Initial results show promising neuron spike detection.” Here’s everything you need to know about the Neuralink experiment.

All about the Neuralink experiment

The experiment is called ‘PRIME Study’ which is expected to last 6 years. As per reports, Neuralink has built a 4mm-square chipset, called N1, which is meant to be implanted into the inside of the skull. The chip has extremely thin wires attached to it that reach into the brain. The wires can receive and detect brain signals that are relayed between neurons, and they can generate their own impulse as well, which imitate that of the neurons. Musk says the device is named Telepathy.

According to the company, the chip can connect with 1000 different brain cells. A patient can have up to 10 chips implanted, the company claims. The experiment builds upon decades of technology aimed at implanting electrodes in human brains to interpret signals and treat conditions such as paralysis, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease, Bloomberg reported. It is just one of the 11 surgeries that Neuralink aims to perform in 2024.

How will it help people?

According to Musk, this Neuralink experiment aims to primarily help people with paralysis. Over time, it could potentially be used to aid those with vision and hearing impairments. But the ultimate goal? Merging humanity with artificial intelligence (AI), which is something straight out of Cyberpunk 2077.

Who all are eligible?

To qualify for the study, there is a condition. Neuralink’s patient registry application states that the volunteers must suffer from one of the following conditions: quadriplegia, paraplegia, visual impairment or blindness, aphasia or the inability to speak, hearing impairment or deafness, and/or major limb amputation (affecting above or below the elbow and/or above or below the knee).

Patients must also be legal adults, meaning at least 18 years old and the age of majority in their state. They should also be a US citizen or a permanent resident.

What I want to see and what we know so far

0
Rita El Khoury / Android Authority

Android 14 isn’t even half a year old, and yet there are already early rumors swirling around the next major Android release. Many of these rumors come from code dives into Android 14 QPR2, which means some of these features could significantly change or even be cut from Android 15 ahead of its official launch.

Android 15: Features we want to see

Android 14 was a relatively iterative update, but everything we’ve seen from previous betas indicates Google is busy working on some bigger changes that will eventually make their way to Android 15. Before we dive into all the rumors, let’s start by taking a look at just a few features I’d love to see come to Android 15.

App cloning and/or a secure folder

Some of us have more than one account for select social or work-related apps. While many apps like Instagram, Messenger, and TikTok now have their built-in solutions for these scenarios, there are still many apps out there that don’t allow you to run more than one account without workarounds like fully logging in and out each time. Samsung and several other Android phone makers handle this in a variety of ways. For example, Samsung has a Dual Messenger feature that lets you clone a lot of major social networks, and you can also effectively run two instances using Samsung’s Secure Folder feature.

Android 15 should finally bring an official app cloning tool to Android. I’d like to see something that lets you make endless duplicates that can be placed anywhere on your phone, though it’s more likely we’ll just get our take on Secure Folder. In fact, the rumors already suggest Google is doing just that. The new feature will be called Private Space and will let Android users hide and lock their apps. Likely, you’ll also be able to run multiple instances of the app this way, though we don’t have any specifics on how all this will work.

Widgets could use an overhaul

New enhanced weather widget in One UI 6

Damien Wilde / Android Authority

It’s time for Android to update the way it handles widgets. Back in the earlier days of Android, you could add widgets to the lock screen, but this feature was removed with Android 5.0 Lollipop. It’s time for this to come back! I always felt they should be an option, but now that Apple has embraced widgets in a big way with iOS, the time is definitely right.

Widgets have evolved a lot recently and, in many ways, Apple is ironically leading the pack right now. This goes for stacked widgets as well. The ability to stack widgets in iOS is a helpful addition, and Android 15 could benefit from this and other widget enhancements if it wants to continue to be the leader in the widget space it created.

How likely is it that Android 15 will make these changes? Code within the Android 14 QPR2 beta suggests that lock screen widgets may soon be a thing, though there have yet to be any leaks or code suggesting stacked widgets are part of this plan.

Floating Windows

Floating app window on a smartphone

Hadlee Simons / Android Authority

Floating widgets aren’t as common in many of the most mainstream Android skins these days, but I’ve found the feature pretty useful when I’ve encountered them on skins like ColorOS and MIUI. In short, these skins let you resize any app so it fits on the screen without taking up the entire width of the display. You can even overlay apps onto other ones, which can come in handy. For example, you’re planning groceries for the week but need to keep using the calculator to add up totals. Keeping the calculator as a floating window makes it easy for you to grab and use at any time.

Is this a must-have feature many will care about? Probably not, but sometimes even the smallest additions can prove to be truly useful, even if only for some of us.

Further customization options, especially for icons

Photo of the lock screen on a Pixel phone

Mishaal Rahman / Android Authority

Google has pushed customizability a lot in recent Android iterations, but I feel there’s room to go even further, especially when it comes to icons.

Android 12 introduced themed icons as a beta feature, but many app makers ignore the feature, so applying themes tends to create a garbled mess of inconsistent icons. Google needs to address this either by partnering with more app makers or by simply creating better tools that can take icons for apps that ignore this feature and force them into Google’s style, perhaps using some kind of generative AI. It’s certainly possible.

It’s not just about the theming, though. I’d like to see icons get more customizations for shapes, fonts, and even the style of icons presented in the Quick Menu. Android used to allow this, but its changes in Android 12 removed this for better consistency with its new theming system. Irony, anyone?

While we’re talking about customizations, I’d also like to see the Quick Menu get some love. While you can already do a fair amount with Quick Settings, I’d like to see more granular controls, such as combining shortcuts into one function. Let’s say you have a routine consisting of a few different shortcuts; this would allow you to trigger them all at once. On a related note, I’d also like the option to control some things separately that are combined, like Wi-Fi and Mobile Networks. I hated when Google merged these under one roof, and I know I’m far from the only one.

Android 15 expected release date and name

android 15 year birthday 2

Rita El Khoury / Android Authority

  • Android 14 — October 4, 2023
  • Android 13 — August 15, 2022
  • Android 12 — October 19, 2021

Android stopped officially naming its versions publicly years ago, but internally the sweets-based naming convention continues. With that in mind, Android 15 is known as Vanilla Ice Cream by the Google team. As for when it comes out? Good question.

For years, Android has stuck with a fairly consistent release schedule. Google tends to officially confirm its next OS in February, followed by a beta period that starts sometime in the spring, and a final release in the fall. Usually, the final release takes place in October to coincide with the latest Google Pixel launch, though it does change from time to time. For example, Android 13 was released on August 15, 2022, to older Pixel devices, two months ahead of the launch of the Pixel 6.

We’d say Google will likely follow their usual patterns and confirm the next OS in early February, especially considering Android 15 rumors are starting to heat up right now. An actual official Android 15 stable release should no doubt happen in the fall of 2024. The year 2022 was likely an outlier, so we’d say an October release is more likely, but it’s too early to say for sure.

Will there be an Android 15 Beta?

While the Android 15 stable release is likely not coming until the very end of 2024, what about an Android 15 Beta? Again, Google has been pretty consistent here. Unless something major changes, we’d say it’s a fairly safe bet that the Android 15 Beta will start sometime in mid-to-late April of 2024.

As always, you can expect multiple iterations between Android 15’s first beta and the Android 15 stable release. The first few betas are typically pretty rough and not nearly stable enough for use as a daily driver, so we recommend waiting until the beta is further along or, ideally, using an older secondary device for testing the Android 15 beta when it arrives.

Android 15 rumored features

We’ve already taken a look at what we’d like to see from Android 15 and have even looked at when it might be heading our way. While we have big expectations for Android 15, what does the rumor mill say so far? We’ve already discussed how Google may bring back widgets to the lock screen and has plans for its own take on Samsung’s Secure Folder, but that’s just scratching the surface.

App pairing could be coming to Android 15

Google Pixel 8 homescreen in hand

Robert Triggs / Android Authority

Google has been testing the ability to make app pairs for a while, and Android 14 QPR2 Beta 2 finally made the feature officially usable for the first time. If you’re unaware, app pairing lets you create a shortcut icon on the home screen that launches a pair of apps at once. For example, Google Keep and Calculator would be natural bedfellows for me (I use Keep for groceries, Christmas budgets, and more). While this beta feature may suddenly appear before Android 15 arrives, the fact it’s been around for a while in code dives makes it clear this is a long-term priority for Google.

Hands-free ChatGPT and other assistants may soon come to Android

cuva

Mishaal Rahman / Android Authority

_cuva

Right now, Google only lets you launch Google Assistant by voice command, though some OEMs load up their in-house assistants as well, such as Samsung’s Bixby. A hidden page in the Android beta hints at a voice activation feature in the works that will allow you to assign any assistant as the default. Supporting this, a recent ChatGPT code dive suggests that OpenAI is also working on such a feature. It’s very possible Google could be collaborating with major assistant makers to ensure they will be able to support the feature if and when it launches on Android 15.

Play Protect may help protect you from phishing

Google Play Protect 2021

Joe Hindy / Android Authority

Google Play Protect might be getting an upgrade by Android 15, at least if a feature spotted in Android 14 QPR2 actually makes it to the next version of the OS. A new Play Protect feature in the beta has been discovered that checks app activity for deceptive behavior including phishing. If it detects bad actors it will warn other Android users and take actions to protect your device as well.

Switching Bluetooth devices might get even easier

Android 14 QPR 2 Beta 3 Bluetooth QuickSettings toggle

Even though I’m not an Apple fan by any stretch of the imagination, I have to admit that I’ve always liked the way their OS handles Bluetooth devices. You get more integrated information, and it’s easier to switch devices. It looks like Google wants to simplify the process on Android as well. Another QPR2 feature spotted suggests Google is working on a Bluetooth page that lets you quickly connect and disconnect individual devices without going into the full system settings.

Plenty more to come

Every new Android feature we’ve seen so far has been part of the Android 14 QPR2 Beta or has been spotted within its code, and there’s plenty more in the works. There are also plans for a new setting that makes all apps dark, taskbar pinning, and more. Check out our guide to Android 14 QPR2 Beta 3 for even more details.

Some of these features will come as feature drops over time and won’t necessarily be tied to one particular OS version. Still, everything mentioned above has a pretty large chance of making it to Android in 2024. It’s just less clear if everything hinted at above will be part of the Android 15 experience from day one, or if some of these features will debut long before or after the next major Android release.

Android 15 compatibility

Google Pixel 8 in hand

Robert Triggs / Android Authority

Android 15 has yet to be confirmed, so we can’t say for sure which devices will and won’t get it so early. Any major flagship released in the last few years will eventually receive the update, though the wait could be significant for some devices. We can confidently say that any recent Pixel should be able to get both Android 15 and any of its developer previews from day one. Here are just a few devices you should expect to support it:

  • Pixel 6 and higher
  • Pixel 6 Pro and higher
  • Pixel 6a or higher
  • Pixel Tablet
  • Pixel Fold

Samsung Patent Shows a New Square-Shaped Smartphone With Extendable Sliding Display: Report

0
Samsung is possibly working on a square-shaped smartphone with an extendable display. A new patent was spotted online which shows a small square device with an extendable display that pops out from either end of the device via a sliding motion. This new patent comes a month after the patents of two Samsung technologies, named Flex Magic and Flex Magic Pixel, were seen in Europe’s trademark registration portal, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). The technology was described as an “expandable screen for smartphones”. The US patent could be for a similar technology, although the document does not mention these terms.

The patent was first spotted by Website Rating in collaboration with tipster David Kowalski from xleaks7. The report shows a PDF of the patent which mentions the United States Patent Application Publication and shows the name of the applicant as Samsung Display. The filing date for the patent is June 22, 2023. As per the patent, Samsung is registering a new display technology that can be extended from multiple directions.

The main innovation in the Samsung display comes in the form of “prevention of the spring-back action of a metal layer at the end of a sliding display.” This helps mitigate the issue of panel cracking due to consistent strikes of the metal layer with the display panel and adds longevity to the device by making it more robust. The patent also mentions that both OLED and LCD displays can be used with this technology.

While the Samsung patent itself does not mention a square-shaped smartphone, the report highlights it as such. However, the ambiguous wording in the patent suggests it can also be used for smart TVs, AR devices, smartwatches, or an entirely new gadget. There is no official information regarding this. Further, there is no word on Samsung working on a square-shaped smartphone with an extendable display, but it might be under wraps.

Based on a report by GizmoChina on the Flex Magic Pixel patent, the new patent appears to be quite similar. However, there are some significant differences as well. The Samsung Flex Magic patent describes the technology as an “expandable screen for smartphones” and “smartphones in the shape of a watch,” whereas the new patent does not use such language.

I Tried Mill’s Smart Kitchen Bin That Turns Food Scraps Into Dirt – Just Don’t Call It Compost

0

Like

  • Grinds most kitchen scraps into odorless dirt
  • Makes very little noise
  • Cut my kitchen waste by more than half
  • Meant to ease two environmental burdens: food waste and factory farming
  • Has a sleek, minimalist look
  • Cheaper than most private curbside compost services

Don’t like

  • Expensive monthly subscription
  • Company is not yet using material for chicken feed -Other bins turns scraps into something closer to compost

No matter how vigilant we are against food waste, unless we’re composting regularly — be it by choice or municipal mandate — we’re sending to landfills untold amounts of organic waste that could be used elsewhere. But even composting may not be the most environmentally sound way to deal with spoiled produce, cast-off fish skin and leftover chicken marsala.

<!–>

mill kitchen bin with food scraps inside mill kitchen bin with food scraps inside

–> <!–>

The Mill kitchen bin system hopes to make more out of your kitchen scraps than just compost.

Mill

A new crop of kitchen composters and smart bins has emerged in the past few years. Each one aims to reduce the amount of kitchen scraps that end up in household trash cans and local landfills. The Mill bin is the latest and perhaps most ambitious at-home approach to food waste diversion.

–>And it’s definitely not a composter.

The Mill bin doesn’t make compost — and that’s OK

Mill doesn’t claim that its bin makes compost like its competitors — the Lomi, Vitamix FoodCycler and Reencle Prime among them — and that’s by design. In fact, Mill argues those machines can’t make compost that quickly either. Instead, Mill’s approach involves a closed-loop subscription service where apple cores, avocado pits and moldy bread are ground and dried inside a leased smart bin and sent back to be sold as an ingredient for making chicken feed.

<!–>

The novel system is meant to curb food waste in the home while also providing a sustainable source of livestock food that lessens the need for industrial farming. For context, growing food is a massive drag on the environment. It demands about 20% of US land and more than 30% of the energy we produce, according to a study by the University of California, Davis. An estimated 36% of food grown globally is used to feed livestock, as reported by National Geographic.

Read moreNope, You Can’t Recycle Black Plastic Takeout Boxes. Here’s What You Can Recycle

Mill’s idea makes good sense, and the company has received favorable legal rulings and recommendations on its way to getting the bin’s output deemed suitable for use in chicken feed — it’s not used for making chicken feed, as of this writing.

I decided to see how the Mill bin worked in practice. Using the sleek smart bin was easy, and it cut my weekly household waste by at least half. It functions as efficiently as any smart home trash bin we’ve tested. But the bottom may fall out for some when you get to Mill’s payment plan.

Mill’s system is expensive compared with other kitchen waste solutions

The Lomi composter about to eat a banana peel The Lomi composter about to eat a banana peel

Buying a Mill bin outright ($1,000) will cost you double that of a Lomi machine.

Justin Tech/CNET

The Mill subscription costs $33 a month, or $396 per year, a recurring fee that includes free pickup of processed scraps and the use of the smart kitchen bin (with the subscription you don’t own the bin). The subscription also gets you free filter replacements (needed about every 60 days) and servicing, should anything go wrong. That cost is about the same as the price of a curbside composting program, and most of those don’t include a smart bin.

Mill just launched a nonsubscription model too, but it’s a budget-buster. The machine costs a whopping $1,000 to buy outright and includes a year of filters but doesn’t include material pickup.

How the Mill setup works: What you can and can’t process

Setting up the bin and a profile in the app took only a few minutes. The most laborious part was moving the bin around the kitchen, since it weighs 50 pounds.

chicken bones in mill bin chicken bones in mill bin

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Mill bin had pulverized these chicken bones in one grind-and-dry cycle.

David Watsky/CNET

I was surprised by the modest size of the part of the bin that holds scraps, compared with the entire appliance, which is about the size of most standard kitchen bins. But I realized after a few grinds that it was a nonissue. The Mill shrinks food by more than half, and it took me more than two weeks to fill it up even once.

There’s a list of food scraps that Mill recommends processing and others that are on a no-fly list — either because the Mill bin can’t process them without jamming or because the scraps would be compromised for animal feed.

Unusually oily food or food made up of too much sugar isn’t recommended for the bin. Dead houseplants, of which I have a steady supply, are also a no-go. The same goes for corn husks, mass amounts of potato peels and larger bones.

But still, the Mill handled more types of waste than I thought it would. The gears easily gobbled up large, dense avocado pits and took care of cooked chicken carcasses. It handled all the coffee grounds I threw in it and pulverized produce seeds and peels.

Mill’s kitchen bin turns food scraps into the base for chicken feed. While the feed is not currently being produced with the material, Mill has won a few favorable decisions and recommendations from the FDA and opther governing bodies.

The Mill bin starts grinding and dehydrating food at whatever time you tell it to via the mobile app. It takes about six hours to complete a cycle, so right before bed made the most sense for me. After a few audible and dog-startling grunts, the Mill eases into action and emits only a soft whirr for the remainder of the cycle.

In the morning, like magic, gnarly food scraps have been transformed into something that looks a lot like rich soil or compost. I disposed of shellfish, salmon skin, moldy bread and other classically smelly things in my Mill and never once awoke to an unpleasant odor.

The handy app tells you when it’s time to empty the contents of the Mill into a prepaid shipping box and schedule a pickup. It’s not hard to judge this on your own, though, in case you don’t want another mobile app telling you what to do.

My scheduled pickup didn’t happen, but I was able to get the box into the hands of a USPS driver the next day.

I couldn’t believe how many food scraps I was producing

It was revelatory to have a visual representation each day of how much food waste I produce that’s typically destined for the landfill. Hucking banana peels and stale crackers happens in small doses over a day or week, but boy does it add up quickly.

While I was using the Mill system, I marveled at how seldom I was taking out the trash. That also meant using fewer plastic garbage bags — another one of the brand’s big selling points.

What else can you do with the Mill material? Not much

Mill material isn’t a replacement for soil or fertilizer.

To test the processed food’s viability, I mixed some with planting soil, roughly half and half, and tried to rehouse an aloe plant. It died within a few days. As a reminder, Mill doesn’t claim the output is fit for nourishing plants. I was just hopeful, I guess.

On that subject, I spoke with someone about what can be done with Mill material if you choose not to send it back. Sally Brown is a research professor at the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences at the University of Washington and a self-proclaimed soil nerd. She told me that though dirt alone can’t support plants, it can be mixed with mature soil in your yard or garden, where it’ll continue to compost on its own and eventually deliver nutrients to the surrounding flora. Using a ratio of 1-to-10 (Mill dirt to soil) is recommended.

While Mill is very clear about its machine not making viable compost, it does give your food scraps a huge headstart if you plan to treat them and turn them into real compost on your own.

Mill material can also be safely scattered or diffused in most outdoor areas. Just don’t expect a bounty of wildflowers to spring up.

The Mill system is great… if you can afford it

The Mill bin looks nice and works extremely well.

Mill

The Mill bin as an appliance gets a near-perfect score, and on its face the concept is deeply admirable. Mill’s program is, in theory, a more powerful fix than most composting systems, since it addresses food waste and provides a sustainable source of food for livestock, which could curb carbon-heavy feed farming.

But the cost of Mill’s setup can’t be ignored. If you can swing the monthly dues, Mill aims to be a more comprehensive solution to food waste than most options. (Reminder: Chicken feed isn’t yet being made with the material.) But I couldn’t quite justify it, particularly when my city now offers a free, albeit stinkier, way to recycle food scraps at scale.

Your other options for kitchen scraps

Classic composting

The cheapest fix for food waste is classic at-home composting, but it’s tricky to do and takes dedication and commitment. It’s also an odorous affair, particularly if you live in tight quarters or up several flights of stairs and can’t get the food waste outside immediately. Freezing food scraps until you can transport them to an outdoor pile helps. Here’s our guide to starting a compost pile and our step-by-step explainer on how to build a (surprisingly not gross) worm farm for composting.

Other curbside compost services

Other private compost pickup services exist, but most don’t include a smart bin. They’ll retrieve your kitchen waste every week to be reused or recycled in other ways. They typically cost anywhere from $25 to $40 a month, depending on where you live.

Cheaper smart kitchen bins and countertop composters

Lomi’s grow mode produces a material similar to Mill’s but without the high subscription cost.

Justin Tech/CNET

All three of Mill’s competitors offer countertop models that are hundreds of dollars cheaper. The Lomi by Pela, which we tested in 2022, is $500 for the machine but can be had for as little as $300 on sale. Vitamix’s FoodCycler, one that we’re currently testing, starts at $400 for the base FC-50 model. The Lomi and FoodCycler also have recurring costs in the form of pads and filters. For Lomi, they’ll run you about $9 per month.

Reencle, which makes the boldest claims about turning food scraps into nutrient-rich fertilizer in two days using microbes that emulate the human digestive system, sells a composter that starts at $500. Dr. Brown, who works with Mill, told me you can’t really make true compost that quickly. We’re planning to test this model to see if it can.

The problem Mill aims to solve is too big for one appliance

With its closed-loop food scrap recycling system, Mill takes aim at both food waste and excessive factory farming for animal feed.

An estimated 30% to 40% of the food supply is wasted each year, according to the US Department of Agriculture. That’s more than 131 billion pounds of food that otherwise could be consumed. About 45% of that waste happens in the home, which is an awful lot but still leaves more than 50% that occurs in restaurants, retailers, supermarkets and on farms.

As with a number of other proposed solutions to sprawling environmental woes, Mill’s fix would be a drop in the bucket — but every drop helps. To make a real impact in positive waste diversion, Mill’s program would need to be adopted at scale. At $33 a month, that seems unlikely, but a large-scale government contract with the virtuous home tech brand might be a natural fit.

Is the Mill kitchen bin worth it?

As a decades-long city dweller, I’ve considered the curbing of kitchen waste to be a largely improbable notion. Though recent municipal composting mandates have been encouraging, including in Brooklyn, where I live.

With a free compost program available to me, I couldn’t justify the recurring cost for Mill. But if your budget allows or you were planning to pay for curbside recycling anyway, there’s no good reason not to tag into Mill’s smart food recycling system.

The chickens will love you for it.
