Onvis is up there as one of the most reliable HomeKit vendors around. They make quality products and are typically among the first to use new technology like Thread. I recently picked up the new Onvis Smart Motion Sensor to automate some of our living room lights while tracking the temperature.

What can you do with the Onvis Smart Motion Sensor?
The Onvis Smart Motion Sensor tracks motion, but it does more than that as well. It also tracks room temperature and humidity. You can follow these statistics via Siri and the Home app and create automation. If you’re monitoring humidity below a certain level, you can turn on a HomeKit humidifier to boost the levels. If you’re using the Onvis app, you can access this data as well, and it’s locally retained for 32 days.
Because the Onvis Smart Motion Sensor is battery-powered, it can easily be put on a bookshelf or hidden behind something as long as it has a line of sight.
Setting up with HomeKit
The Onvis Smart Motion Sensor is a native HomeKit native, meaning there is no bridging from another app in software. There’s a HomeKit QR code on the side of the device, so once you pull the battery tab, you can scan it using the Home app > + > Add Accessory.
It took a minute or so for the Home app to connect to it, but then I could name the device and select the room in my house where it would be located. You can change that in the future as well.
HomeKit automations are where the device shines. We have three different sets of lights on the main level of our house that we typically turn on first thing in the morning. Using this device, I constructed an automation that turns these lights onto a certain dimmer level when it detects motion between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM. The idea is that when I wake up in the morning, it’ll detect me and automatically turn the lights on to the preset level. I manually turn these lights on when I wake up every morning. Now, it’s completely automated.

Overall, it’s an excellent option for HomeKit when you need a motion sensor. It’s a significant bonus that tracks temperature and humidity as well. There is no Onvis cloud and no tracking of your data. Everything stays local on your device and in HomeKit. It also supports Thread for improved reliability.

Apple has been making preparations to open the gates of iOS to allow third-party app marketplaces and apps on its platform in the European Union (EU). It recently rolled out the iOS 17.4 betas versions of the upcoming update that added support for alternative marketplaces. Now, the iPhone maker has released updates for App Store Connect and TestFlight apps to onboard these developers. It has also asked the alternative marketplaces to make submissions for the notarisation process for the third-party apps that will be made available on iOS.
Announcing the changes to the two apps on its developer website, Apple said that developers in the EU can now add their marketplaces to the App Store Connect app that lets developers monitor their app’s sales and downloads, reply to App Store reviews, get notifications for new reviews, and more. Similarly, changes have been made to the TestFlight app, which lets developers beta-test new features before rolling it out.
But before alternative marketplaces can be added to the iOS ecosystem, the developers will have to agree to Apple’s business terms and complete the notarisation process. According to a report by MacRumors, business terms include a core technology fee that Apple is charging both the marketplace and the app by the number of installs. Third-party marketplaces will have to pay EUR 0.50 (roughly Rs. 45) per instal, and apps will have to pay the same amount after completing one million instals.
The notarisation process will also be important for third-party marketplaces and apps as Apple will determine whether an app is malicious or not. While a process like that is needed to ensure user safety from scammers and hackers, some have raised concerns about whether Apple will use this to disqualify competing apps and marketplaces.
Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, is among those who voiced their displeasure when Apple first announced the process. In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), he called the payment by instals a “junk fee”. On the notarisation process, he said, “Epic has always supported the notion of Apple notarisation and malware scanning for apps, but we strongly reject Apple’s twisting this process to undermine competition and continue imposing Apple taxes on transactions they’re not involved in.”

As per a Wired report, LinkedIn’s latest AI chatbot uses generative AI to advise users whether they’re a good fit for a particular job, and even provides some sort of an insider information. It can be found under the job listings tab on LinkedIn and is marked with a sparkle emoji. Users can ask the AI chatbot a variety of questions related to the role, including the job description, responsibilities, benefits, and work culture.
In fact, users can even ask something as simple as “Am I a good fit for the role?” Then, the AI chatbot goes through company profiles and other information available to provide the necessary information in bulleted points.
But why has LinkedIn rolled out this new AI product? It is because “job hunting sucks”, according to Rohan Rajiv, a director of product management at LinkedIn. Speaking to Wired, Rajiv likened job hunting to climbing a really high wall, where one is unable to see what’s on the other side. Rajiv said, “You’re really hoping that you can reach out to the other side of the wall and figure out: What are my chances here? What is it like to work there?”

This AI chatbot is just one of the several AI features that have been rolled out by LinkedIn in the last few months. It recently introduced an AI-powered feature that makes introducing yourself to others or asking about them easier. This feature, only available to LinkedIn Premium users, leverages the power of AI to help draft a message. It pulls in information from both your profile and the person you are looking to chat with, irrespective of whether they’re in or outside your network. Users can choose whether to introduce themselves or ask about their current or previous work experience.
