Meta Quest 3 owners check the phone app as 12 free games might be waiting for you

0

If you own a Meta Quest 3 you should check your Meta Quest smartphone app as you might have a six-month free trial of Meta Quest Plus waiting for you.

Previously this offer was an exclusive order incentive for people who bought the 512GB Meta Quest 3 model, but Quest 3 owners on Reddit have noticed that the 6-month trial is available to them even if they bought the 128GB version. This means rather than saving only $7.99 / £7.99 from a one-month trial everyone can get $47.94 / £47.94 worth of subscription value for no cost.

Meta Quest Plus is like a Netflix for Quest VR games. Each month you’ll get 2 free VR titles that you can add to your Quest library, and for as long as you are subscribed you can play them. If you unsubscribe, you’ll lose access to your free games until you rejoin Meta Quest Plus.  So with this trial that’s 12 free games, which is a pretty excellent deal that rivals this year’s best Black Friday deals.

To see if you can get this free six-month trial you’ll need to open open the Meta Quest app on your smartphone. Use Search to look for Meta Quest Plus, then on the Quest Plus store page tap the blue button at the bottom of your screen that says “Start your six-month trial.” (Image credit: Meta)

This offer doesn’t appear to be exclusive to new subscribers either. Comments on the original Reddit post suggest that people can get the six-month trial if they’ve tried the one-month trial before, and even if they’re subscribed – with the six free months being added on top of the subscription they already have.

It also appears to be available in every region, though some users have reported they can only see the one-month trial; that said it’s not clear if they’re Meta Quest 3 or Oculus Quest 2 owners.

If you’re looking to expand your VR library then Meta Quest Plus is a good way to do it, as the two games you get are worth more than the monthly $7.99 / £7.99 fee. However, you don’t get to pick which games you get so you might prefer to spend more but get the games you actually want.

The two free titles at the time of writing are NFL Pro Era and Angry Birds: Isle of Pigs. We’ve not tried either but both titles have been fairly well received with a four and four-and-a-half star rating, respectively, on the Quest Store.

If you don’t have a Meta Quest 3, or an Oculus Quest 2, then you can check out our Black Friday Oculus Quest 2 deals guide to see the latest and greatest offers. If it’s still available you might want to go after Amazon’s incredible Quest 2 deal as it gets you $50 / £50 off the headset and free $50 / £50 Amazon credit too.

Google Bard can now answer your questions about YouTube videos; This is how it works

0
Earlier this week OpenAI’s ChatGPT introduced voice features to its mobile apps, and now its competitor Google Bard has received new capabilities too. Google Bard will now be able to watch and understand YouTube videos and answer your questions on it. This new feature has been rolled out and users should be able to test it out. The feature is part of Bard Extensions which were introduced earlier this year. Through different extensions of different Google products, Bard can collaborate and answer queries from the app-specific knowledge base.

The new features were announced in Bard’s blog post which said, “We’re taking the first steps in Bard’s ability to understand YouTube videos. For example, if you’re looking for videos on how to make olive oil cake, you can now also ask how many eggs the recipe in the first video requires”.

Google Bard can now watch YouTube videos

This feature does have some limitations. Bard can understand YouTube videos to a certain extent. It can process the audio and video content of a video and extract the main points and ideas. It can also understand the overall tone and sentiment of a video. However, it will face difficulty understanding videos with complex or nuanced language, or videos that rely heavily on visual cues. Further, Bard does not answer questions from videos that contain ‘potentially unsafe content’.

So, what could be some of the use cases of this feature? Bard’s feature can be very helpful in scenarios where you have to analyze a long video but you do not have the time to watch it in its entirety. You can simply paste the URL and ask it to summarize the video. You can also ask it contextual questions or questions about a specific aspect of the video. However, do note that it may not be able to answer such questions in case the video does not have a caption file that it can read.

YouTube is also testing a similar feature for its Premium users where they can ask an AI-powered chatbot questions about videos or ask for recommendations, and to tell you more about a topic. Interestingly, unlike YouTube, Bard’s feature is available to everyone.

0

Realme GT 5 Pro is all set to be launched in China later this month. In the build-up to its imminent arrival, Realme has released new teasers highlighting the camera details of the premium flagship phone. The handset is confirmed to carry a 50-megapixel Sony IMX890 telephoto periscope camera on the rear. Earlier this month, Realme announced that the Realme GT 5 Pro will be powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, coupled with 1TB of onboard storage. It is confirmed to be equipped with a larger heat dissipation unit, a 3,000 nits display, and an upgraded telephoto camera.

Realme teased the photography prowess of the upcoming Realme GT 5 Pro via Weibo. The flagship handset is confirmed to come with a 50-megapixel Sony IMX80 sensor coupled with an f/2.6 aperture and 3x optical zoom with optical image stabilisation (OIS) and electronic image stabilisation (EIS) support. The setup is claimed to deliver up to 120x super zoom.

The Realme GT 5 Pro is already confirmed to run on Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. The new mobile chipset and Realme’s computing framework is said to offer 10 percent better power efficiency and up to 44 percent faster frame processing in the new device.

Realme has disclosed a few specifications of the Realme GT 5 Pro recently. It is confirmed to ship with 1TB of storage and a BOE-made display is teased to offer 3,000 nits of peak brightness. The handset is confirmed to offer improved heat dissipation technology with a surface area of around 10,000mm square and an upgraded telephoto camera.

As per a recent TENAA listing, the Realme GT 5 Pro will have a 6.78-inch (1,264×2,780 pixels) AMOLED display. It could be offered in 8GB, 12GB, and 16GB RAM options along with 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB inbuilt storage options. The phone is said to have a triple rear camera unit. For selfies, it might get a 32-megapixel sensor at the front.

The Realme GT 5 Pro is tipped to come with a 5,400mAh battery with support for 100W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.

Humane Ai Pin: Can it make you forget your phone? Know what it can do

0
Wearable technology has grown by leaps and bounds in the last few years. While smartwatches were the tech marvel at the time, they are now a common gadget. This is where Humane, the Sam Altman-backed startup, comes in. Its latest tech innovation has awed the tech community with its first-ever wearable product called the Humane Ai Pin. As the name suggests, it is a wearable pin that is being called a smartphone without a screen and it promises to replace smartphones, and it is powered by AI. But what can it do?

Humane Ai Pin: What can it do?

The Humane Ai Pin can potentially act as a replacement for your smartphone but without a screen. It is equipped with multiple sensors, a camera, a laser ink display, and multi-gesture support. The Ai Pin can be attached to a dress or a shirt via magnetic arrays. It features a 13MP ultra-wide camera, a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery with wireless charging capabilities, and a dual microphone array.

The Ai Pin is activated by swiping down on it. Humane claims that the Ai Pin’s camera and microphone do not wake until turned on, promising privacy. There’s also a trust light that lets you and those around you know that the Humane Ai Pin is currently in use. It is a standalone device that doesn’t require a connection to your smartphone.

According to the company, it can draft and send messages and emails without you having to type. You can simply speak to the device and it will use the prompt to suggest a draft using its laser ink display. You can simply hold your palm out and see the display there. If you’re not happy, you can add more prompts to change them.

Backed by the power of AI, the Humane Ai Pin can recommend music playlists, which can be controlled using gestures. It can be asked any questions that you would usually ask an AI chatbot. Additionally, it has access to your emails and messages, therefore it can contextualize information.

The UI can be navigated using simple gestures such as touch, tap, and swipe, that give you access to features such as answering calls, controlling the volume, capturing pictures, and more.

Will it replace your smartphone? The jury is still out on that and will depend a lot on how well the entire gamut of operations has been deployed. At least for those who hate to lug around their smartphones, this can be a wonderful digital aid especially as its camera can record almost everything that you see.

Oura Ring elevates health-care focus with Apple’s executive Jason Oberfest’s key hire

0
Oura Ring, known for its innovative smart ring tracking sleep quality and vital health metrics, has elevated its commitment to health care with the appointment of former Apple executive Jason Oberfest. Formerly a pivotal figure in Apple’s health team since his transition from startup Mango Health in 2018, Oberfest now assumes the role of Head of Clinical Strategy at Oura, and his expertise is expected to bolster Oura’s health-care strategy.

Tom Hale, CEO of Oura, expressed enthusiasm about the company’s expansion plans and highlighted the significance of Oberfest’s addition to the team. “With Jason’s hiring, we are poised to delve deeper into the health-care world,” Hale said to Bloomberg. Oberfest will take the reins of Oura’s health-care team and lead the development of its clinical strategy, marking the initiation of a new chapter for the company.

Oura’s Health Tech Roadmap

Oura’s ambitions align with Hale’s vision to position the Finnish company as more than just a wellness tracker, aiming to emulate Apple’s success in transforming its watch into a legitimate health tool. Apple, in 2018, made history by introducing the first consumer tech watch doubling as a health device. The Apple Watch’s features, including an FDA-cleared electrocardiogram (ECG), have proven instrumental in alerting users to irregular heart rhythms and potential signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib).

Apple’s seamless integration of health and fitness features has become integral to its product offerings. The latest Apple Watch model boasts a thermometer for fertility planning, a blood oxygen level sensor, advanced sleep tracking algorithms, and an ECG system. The company has extended its health focus to the iPhone, turning it into a fitness tracker with the capability to access hospital records. Apple has even shared compelling stories of its products saving lives by detecting critical health conditions and automatically summoning emergency services during accidents.

While Apple has continued to prioritise health and fitness in its wearable technology, Oura Ring has advanced its health-focused research and formed partnerships to position the smart ring as a holistic health tool. Notably, the company has inked a deal with a health e-commerce platform to facilitate the purchase of the ring through flexible health-care spending accounts (FSAs).

As the wearables market witnesses an evolution from fitness tracking to vital health management, Oura Ring’s strategic hiring of Oberfest signals a pivotal moment in the company’s journey to become a prominent player in the healthcare technology landscape.

Spotify Allowed to Sidestep Play Store Fees as Part of Confidential Deal, Google Executive Says

0

Google receives a substantially lower commission when Spotify’s customers choose to make purchases using the search giant’s in-app billing service.

Google allowed Spotify to sidestep the company’s mandatory Play Store fees, a company executive reportedly confirmed while giving testimony during the ongoing Epic vs Google trial. The Verge reports that a confidential deal with the streaming giant has come to light, revealing that Spotify was allowed to process its own payments on the service without paying Google a commission. The search giant previously sought to protect the details of its deal with Spotify under wraps during the ongoing case with Fortnite maker Epic Games.

According to the report, Google’s head of partnership Don Harrison testified during the ongoing Epic vs Google trial that Spotify did not pay the company any fees when it processed customer payments on its own. If customers chose to pay Spotify via Google’s in-app billing service, the platform paid Google a 4 percent commission.

Google charges most publishers on its platform a 15 percent cut of all app purchases and in-app purchases, but this figure can be lowered in South Korea, India, and 35 other countries where the company offers developers an alternative — user choice billing — that reduces the commission by 4 percent.

The report states that aside from the music streaming platform’s popularity on Android, the Google executive also testified that the search giant and Spotify had agreed to a “success fund” that would see each firm commit $50 million (roughly Rs. 410 crore).

It is worth noting that while Spotify might be receiving special treatment from Google, the company is still liable to pay the in-app purchase commission — that can go up to 30 percent of each transaction — on Apple’s App Store. Like Netflix and many other services, the streaming service doesn’t allow users to purchase a subscription via the Spotify app on iOS.

It’s too early to tell whether these revelations will have an impact on Epic Games’ case against Google. The game publisher sued both Apple and Google over their alleged antitrust practices that include preventing the use of alternative billing systems and alternative app stores on iOS and Android, respectively. The trial has revealed a lot of interesting details about Google and other firms — including a multibillion-dollar deal with Samsung to have the Play Store, Assistant, and Search apps as defaults on Galaxy smartphones.

The Epic vs Apple trial ended earlier this year when the Ninth Circuit Court affirmed a 2021 decision that found the iPhone maker’s ban on competing app stores on iOS did not violate US antitrust law. Apple lost only one claim in the trial — the firm would have to allow developers to allow links to external payment systems inside their apps. Epic has appealed the verdict at the US Supreme Court, while Apple has asked the court to strike down the ninth circuit court’s order blocking its anti-steering rules.
