Immersive, 3D, and ultra-fast displays take over video games at CES 2024
From ergonomic controllers of the future, to comfortable headrests for gamer chairs, and powerful new graphics cards, there was no shortage of slick new technology on display for the gaming community at CES.
However, after the dust settled in the Las Vegas desert, perhaps the most notable theme in gaming to come out of CES was displays.
We are now on WhatsApp. Click to join.
Over the years, advancements in virtual reality (VR) and graphics cards have moved the gaming experience ever closer toward “photorealism,” meaning that video games are approaching the experience of life in the real world.
But it’s not just VR that is transforming this immersive experience. Increasingly, larger monitors, curved screens and panels that can be viewed horizontally or vertically, have pushed the gaming experience to the next level.
At CES 2024, these next-gen displays were on exhibit, sparking excitement for gamers across the globe.
A 3D experience with no glasses needed
The Acer Predator SpatialLabs View 27, a variant of Acer’s existing SpatialLabs displays, targets gaming lovers and offers a glasses-free 3D display.
The monitor uses Acer’s SpatialLabs software to render full 3D games without the need for 3D glasses, using a special lenticular lens layer and integrated eye-tracking cameras that work even when you unconsciously tilt and move your head during gameplay.
The 4K display creates distinct images for each eye, resulting in a 2K resolution per eye in 3D mode with refresh rates up to 160Hz.
Samsung, too, presented an interesting option at CES. Its 37-inch 2D/3D Gaming Monitor that, as its name suggests, can be used in either two or three dimensions, depending on the users’ needs. The monitor was honored at CES with the Best of Innovation award in the Gaming and eSports category — particularly highlighting its versatility to help users with everything from gaming to productivity.
The monitor counts a high-resolution 2D experience, however, when it’s time to game, the monitor can display 3D images in 4K quality to take immersion to the next level. The monitor itself can control the intensity and direction in which graphics are displayed, thanks to artificial intelligence (AI) vision recognition technology and other advances that promise to bring the VR experience to a flat screen.
Speed reaches OLED screens
It seems that display manufacturers are now in the throes of a fierce “megahertz” fight. While liquid-crystal displays (LCDs) have reached refresh rates of around 500 Hz, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels are the next evolution between visual quality and speed.
Many manufacturers are working hard to raise the refresh rates on their OLED-to-show monitors.
Samsung, Dell, and MSI introduced 27-inch monitors with 1440p resolutions at 360 Hz. Asus beat out all three with a 27-inch monitor at 480 Hz. Similarly, LG and Asus introduced 32-inch “Dual-Hz” monitors, with an impressive setup of 4K-240Hz — which can be increased to 480 Hz but only at a lower resolution.
Smaller players making a splash in gaming displays
It wasn’t just the traditional tech giants showing off their powerful displays. Smaller companies, seemingly born to make gaming more immersive, are also flexing their muscles at CES.
You may not know Brelyon now, but they certainly caught the eyes of gamers. The Silicon Valley-based deeptech startup creates desktop displays for gamers, including its massive Brelyon Ultra Reality. The monitor is described as the first desktop monitor to offer image depth, allowing it to achieve a massive field of view and screen size, which translates into a more immersive gaming experience.
Its technology also promises to relax eye muscles for less eye strain. This is thanks to hours of simulations that allowed engineers to optimize the 3D profile of the depth plane to create the best balance between immersion and comfort.
Many of the most ubiquitous technologies used by large companies for their gaming divisions today at some point began as startups. In Brelyon’s case, they’ve received several venture funding rounds from VCs including One Way Ventures, which backs immigrant founders in the US.
As the video game industry evolves, both startups and large tech firms play a hand in moving us closer to a more immersive gaming experience.

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024: How to watch and what to expect
Here’s a breakdown of what we expect to see and how you can tune into Samsung’s Galaxy S24 launch.
Contents
How to watch the next Galaxy Unpacked
Apart from the lucky few who got invited to the in-person event in California, Samsung will livestream the launch on its official website and YouTube platforms. The company has done this in the past, and we expect the same this time around.Samsung has already posted the event invitation on the company’s official YouTube channel. Be sure to set a reminder to give yourself a heads-up before the livestream begins. We’ll be sure to update this with the livestream video as soon as Samsung does.
So what can we expect from the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event, and will Samsung’s new offerings be just as exciting as the hype they’ve created around AI this year?
What to expect from the next Galaxy Unpacked?
As anticipated, Samsung is expected to launch its flagship S-series phones at this year’s Galaxy Unpacked, successors to the Galaxy S23, S23 Plus, and the S23 Ultra. However, Samsung is reportedly going to integrate its Galaxy AI for the first time in these phones. With AI comes an array of features and capabilities, but we’ll get to that in a bit.
Samsung Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus
Rumors suggest that Samsung might maintain the Galaxy S24 prices at the same level as the S23 series, with the smaller S24 potentially starting at $799 and the S24 Plus at $999. In mid-October, leaks hinted at a variety of new colors for the lineup, including black, grey, violet, and a striking new yellow option.
However, camera upgrades for the Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus seem unlikely, and leaks indicate the use of the Samsung Exynos 2400 processor in European models, along with much faster charging. The Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus may sport the LTPO OLED displays this time around, bringing them up to par with the Ultra model.
We might also get larger batteries in both models, with the smallest S24 moving up to a 4000mAh battery and the S24 Plus getting a 4900mAh unit. Combined with the improved efficiency of newer chips, this should lead to better battery life overall.
Samsung S24 Ultra

When people think Ultra, they think big. That’s exactly what we’re expecting to see with this year’s S24 Ultra. It looks like this device is expected to have some major shifts in terms of specs.
The Galaxy S24 Ultra is anticipated to undergo significant changes, with speculations suggesting a shift from a curved to a flat display, making it easier for those S Pen enthusiasts to work with their documents.
Samsung is also rumored to be upgrading the frame on the Galaxy S24 Ultra from Armor Aluminum to Titanium, which follows a similar move from Apple and should make it feel lighter to hold.
One potential rumor suggests that the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s camera configuration shows a 10MP sensor behind a 10x telephoto lens and a 50MP sensor behind a 5x telephoto lens. The other set of rumors seems to be leaning towards a 50MP sensor behind a 5x telephoto lens and a 10MP sensor behind a 3x telephoto lens.
Either way, it looks like we’re getting a 50MP upgrade on one of the telephoto cameras. When it comes to capturing videos, there are speculations that the Galaxy S24 Ultra is said to be able to record 120fps video at 4K resolution, which would match Sony’s flagship Xperia phones.
Some leakers believe that the Ultra is set to get faster charging this year, i.e., 65W. This would be a welcome increase if true since Samsung has stuck with the same charging speeds for years.
For pricing, our guess is that the S24 Ultra will debut at $1,199, similar to the S23 Ultra.
Galaxy AI is here

Artificial Intelligence is the most ‘it’ thing these days, with every single tech company dancing to its tunes, and Samsung has joined the league. With the Galaxy S24, Samsung is said to be launching One UI 6.1 alongside a host of new AI tools. These tools are called “Galaxy AI.”
One leaker, BenIt Bruhner Pro, revealed a slew of them, including AI wallpaper, real-time phone call translation, a Magic Editor-like photo enhancement tool for Samsung Gallery, and more.
Several leakers have been dropping hints on some of these AI tools, and more recently, one tipster took to X to talk about how users will be able to pick from five conversational tones with Samsung keyboard, including professional and casual. Plus, you can add emojis right into your sentences, making the chats more engaging when using the keyboard.
Even note-taking on Samsung devices could be reorganized with the help of AI processing.
Galaxy AI is also integrated into Samsung Keyboard and Samsung Notes on the Galaxy S24 series. 👀This one person who tried the S24 has always used GBoard, but they’re willing to switch to Samsung Keyboard just because of those features. Some of the new features on Samsung… pic.twitter.com/xl57wljONcJanuary 11, 2024
The company announced this week that it’s introducing pop-ups in select cities worldwide to showcase the new S24 series and unveil its Galaxy AI features. These Samsung Experience Spaces will open after the Galaxy Unpacked event on January 17. At these spaces, you can visit and get glimpses of Samsung’s latest innovations, particularly how the tech giant is incorporating AI into its products. Here’s the full list of cities.
Galaxy Ring, Galaxy Fit 3, and Galaxy Buds 3

Other than its major phone drops, there’s been talk that Samsung could reveal some other devices at the launch.
Last year, a Naver report showed Samsung’s smart ring patents, signaling that Samsung could be branching out its wearable efforts and that a so-called “Samsung Galaxy Ring” was in the works to take on devices like the Oura Ring. It was rumored that it could control smart home devices and that the smart ring would bundle PPG and ECG sensors for tracking heart rate, irregular heart rhythm, and blood pressure. And while it was thought the ring could debut alongside the S24, The Elec stated that the “Galaxy Ring” is expected to be released in the third quarter of this year or the first quarter of 2025.
It’s been over three years since the Samsung Galaxy Fit 2 tracker launched. In December 2023, the Bluetooth SIG listing confirmed a new Samsung fitness tracker called the “Samsung Galaxy Fit3” is arriving. Previous leaks have shown the Galaxy Fit 3 will have a wider AMOLED display and a larger battery than the Fit 2. While we speculated that the Samsung Unpacked would be a perfect stage to reveal a new fitness tracker, we’ve got our fingers crossed.
Lastly, we would like to think Samsung is preparing to launch new flagship earbuds during Unpacked, but the latest Galaxy Buds 3 Pro rumors indicate that we won’t likely be seeing them launch alongside the S24.

IIT Guwahati two-stage biodegradation in organic waste management
Municipal solid waste deposited in open dumpsites often contains over 50 percent organic material, generating substantial heat due to long-term decomposition. This not only poses environmental challenges but also hinders the achievement of sustainable development goals.
Compared to other waste biodegradation techniques that require 2-3 months, Rotary Drum Composting (RDC) can convert diverse organic feedstocks into nutrient-dense compost within just 20 days and significantly reduce the municipal waste volume by 60-70 percent. However, the limitation of RDC is inferior compost quality.
Vermicomposting is a superior biodegradation process that traditionally requires a minimum of 60 days, making the process less adaptable for urban municipal corporations.
THE BENEFITS
Clubbing the benefits of both these processes WMRG, IIT Guwahati has developed a unique strategy of two-stage biodegradation. Speaking about the novel technique Professor Ajay S Kalamdhad, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Guwahati said,” We optimised the Rotary Drum Composting technique and combined it with vermicomposting to reduce the duration of biodegradation. The earthworms, Eisenia fetida, can acclimatise faster to partially degraded organic matter from the drum compost and produce vermicompost in just 27 days.“
The microbial composition of the compost was identified through metagenomic analysis. The final product was proven to be non-toxic and safe to be used as a nutrient-rich soil conditioner from waste (4.2 percent total nitrogen).
THE EXPERIMENTAL VERIFICATION
The experimental verification of this combined technique was conducted both in the laboratory and on a large scale at the Solid Waste Laboratory of IIT Guwahati. A 5000-litre RDC unit and a 3000-litre stack vermicomposting unit were established to study the large-scale effect of the process, with the moisture content controlled using horticulture waste collected on campus.
Speaking about its application, Professor Ajay S Kalamdhad said, ”This proven technique not only handles sizeable quantities of organic waste but also offers immediate application feasibility for Municipal Corporations, Industries, Sewage treatment facilities, aquatic weeds and various organic waste management sectors.”
The scaled-up process successfully produced 100 to 150 kg of vermicompost within a month and from 250 to 300 kg of daily waste fed. The increased earthworm count resulted in the secondary end product being the earthworm itself.
The findings of the study have been published in multiple research papers in Journal of Biomass Conversion and Biorefinery, Journal of Environmental Management, Bioresource Technology and Waste Management among others. They have been co-authored by Mr Suryateja Pottipati and Professor Ajay S Kalamdhad.
The innovative process introduced by the Waste Management Research Group at IIT Guwahati has the potential to reshape organic waste treatment facilities globally, providing an environmentally compatible solution to mitigate contamination hazards and produce an outstanding soil conditioner.
To reach the end user of the organic bioproducts, this novel two-stage composting technology has been transferred to The Apshisht Management and Environmental Research Pvt. Ltd. (AMER technologies), a company based in IIT Guwahati incubation centre and the product is being produced on a large scale. The produced product has been marketed as Mati Dhan Organic Vermicompost Fertilizer Manure for Plants on Amazon and INDIAMART.
