Next-gen Apple iPad Mini set to be unveiled in late 2024; check likely features and upgrades

0
Get ready for a new Apple iPad Mini experience as the Cupertino-based tech giant gears up to introduce the seventh generation of its compact tablet in either September or October, 2024. The tech giant last treated us to an iPad Mini update in September 2021, delivering a large 8.3-inch display, a convenient USB-C port, and a Touch ID power button, among other enhancements. With the A15 Bionic chip, 5G support, and compatibility with the second-gen Apple Pencil, the 2021 release showcased Apple’s commitment to innovation.

Traditionally, Apple has been consistent in releasing new iPads every year since the debut of its first tablet in 2010. However, 2023 might break the trend, with rumours circulating that there might not be a new iPad on the horizon.

Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, as reported by MacRumors, hints at a shift in this pattern. Kuo suggests that Apple is gearing up for mass production of the next iPad Mini in the second half of 2024, possibly in July or later.

Not sure which
mobile to buy?

What to Expect from the Next iPad Mini

What can we expect from this eagerly awaited device? The upcoming iPad Mini is rumoured to house a speedier A16 Bionic chip, raising the bar for performance. Speculations also point towards upgraded front and rear cameras. Currently equipped with a 12MP rear camera and a 12MP Ultra Wide front camera, the new iPad Mini might take things up a notch, according to MacRumors.

Colour might have something to look forward to as well, with whispers of new color options for the iPad Mini. The current palette includes Space Gray, Starlight, Pink, and Purple. Additionally, the next iPad Mini is expected to embrace Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, promising faster Wi-Fi speeds and enhanced Bluetooth connectivity, features already present in the latest iPad Pro, iPhone 15 Pro models, and most new Macs.

Leaks also suggest improvements in the upcoming Apple iPad Mini’s screen assembly, specifically addressing the issue of “jelly scrolling” or screen tearing in portrait orientation. This phenomenon, causing text or images to appear tilted due to refresh rate mismatches, could be a thing of the past with the new release.

For those catching up, Apple refreshed the iPad lineup in 2022, updating the iPad, iPad Pro, and iPad Air. The Apple iPad Mini, however, received its last update in September 2021, showcasing a design overhaul and introducing the A15 Bionic chipset. As we eagerly await the next iPad Mini, Apple enthusiasts can anticipate a blend of performance upgrades and exciting new features in the company’s compact tablet offering.

WhatsApp Rolling Out View-Once Photos, Videos for Desktop Apps, Web

0

WhatsApp already offers a disappearing messages feature that deletes a sent message after a set amount of time. WhatsApp users can also send photos and videos that can only be viewed once before being erased from the chat. The latter feature, however, is currently available only to Android and iOS users. The feature was previously offered on desktop and Web versions of the application but was removed for security concerns. Now, a report suggests that the social media platform is reintroducing the “View Once” photos and videos feature for WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp desktop versions.

According to a WABetaInfo report, WhatsApp is rolling out the view once feature for photos and videos on Web and desktop versions of the app. In a screenshot shared in the report, the button to set the “view once” option for the media is seen within the caption bar in the drawing editor on the WhatsApp for Windows platform. The report added that the company is enabling this “view once” photos and videos option for Windows, macOS and linked devices like iPads. The app is also extending this feature to the WhatsApp Web platform, according to the report.

The feature is now rolling out to eligible users. It has already rolled out to some users over the past few weeks as per the report. If you do not see the option on any of your desktop or Web apps yet, it is likely to come around eventually. Make sure that the applications are updated to their latest versions.

The report noted that the Meta-owned platform is reintroducing this feature on desktop and Web that they initially did away with, upon public suggestions and demands. The initial removal cited security issues. Feedback from users, however, suggested that the “view once” feature is a helpful aspect as it helps one view a media file without it eating up the storage space of the phone.

In related news, starting in December, WhatsApp backups on Android will continue to work, as long as users have available cloud storage space on their Google accounts. If someone reaches their storage limit, they will need to free up space on Google Drive to resume backups. Notably, if you do not want your chats to take up storage, you can turn on the “Disappearing Messages” option in the app.

WhatsApp has also added a service to prompt users to add their email address to their WhatsApp account. However, it will not be visible to your WhatsApp contacts but will rather work as a secondary identifier, after your phone number, where the app can send verification codes and the like.

Shoppers click ‘buy’ as retailers cut prices ahead of Cyber Monday; Salesforce eyes huge discounts

0

Holiday shoppers in the U.S. are seeking out the best deals and strategically nabbing the deepest discounts ahead of Cyber Monday, according to data from retailer websites aggregated by third parties. Cyber Monday, as the first Monday after the Thanksgiving holiday has become known as merchants step up online promotions, is set to be the biggest online shopping day of the year in the United States.

Strong online traffic on Black Friday demonstrated a notable pattern of shoppers putting time and effort into selecting the lowest-cost, best-value merchandise, said Rob Garf, vice president and general manager for retail at Salesforce, which tracks data flowing through its Commerce Cloud e-commerce service.

Despite an earlier start to retailers’ holiday promotions this year, there weren’t a lot of great deals initially, Garf said. Yet “consumers were patient, diligent, and they played a game of discount chicken. And they won once again.”

On Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, retailers “stepped up the discounting” to roughly 30% on average in the U.S., he said. And “consumers clicked the buy button,” spending $16.4 billion online in the U.S. and $70.9 billion globally that day, according to Salesforce.

“We saw a big spike,” Garf said, adding that the strong Black Friday online outlay would “pull up” the overall tally for the entire Cyber Week, which started on Tuesday and ends on Monday.

On Cyber Monday, Salesforce expects to see discounts averaging 30% again. The risk for consumers, however, is that products may not be available if they wait, he said.

Salesforce says it derives its benchmarks for online traffic and spending from data flowing through its Commerce Cloud e-commerce service, which it says provides a window into the behavior of 1.5 billion people in 60 countries traversing thousands of e-commerce sites.

Other firms use different measurements to gauge online shopping patterns.

Rival Adobe Analytics forecasts that shoppers will spend a record $12 billion Monday, 5.4% more than last year, representing what it says will be the largest-ever e-commerce shopping day in the U.S. Retailers are set to dangle average price cuts of 30% on electronics, and 19% on furniture, said Vivek Pandya, lead analyst at Adobe Digital Insights.

Last-minute Cyber Monday shoppers could spend $4 billion between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. EST alone “because consumers are going to be concerned about discounts weakening after that,” Pandya said.

Adobe provides merchants with Experience Cloud, a service which powers their e-commerce platforms, giving Adobe a window into aggregate transaction data at 85% of the top 100 internet retailers.

Overall, “consumers are being very strategic, wanting to maximize their shopping when they think they’ll get the best discounts,” Pandya said. “The online retail sector is one of the few where the consumer is a bit more in the driver’s seat,” he said, particularly with toys and seasonal holiday merchandise.

“There are a lot of online merchants vying for their dollar and they can easily compare prices.”

Mastercard, which measures retail sales across all forms of payment, said e-commerce sales rose 8.5% on Black Friday, while in-store sales rose 1%.

“Digital grew dramatically during the pandemic and then it had a reversion to the mean, when people went back to stores,” said Steve Sadove, senior adviser for Mastercard and former CEO of Saks Inc. “Now you are seeing an acceleration in digital, once again. It’s becoming more important.”

5 things about AI you may have missed today: Pentagon replicator AI initiative to Google Dream Track, and more

0
Pentagon’s replicator initiative aims for mass deployment of AI-enabled autonomous vehicles by 2026; Spain’s AI sensation: Aitana, the virtual model, earns up to €10,000 monthly; AI robots revolutionise Japanese agriculture, easing labour shortages in smart farms; California Governor advocates statewide GenAI training to navigate shifting job landscape- this and more in our daily roundup. Let us take a look.

1. Pentagon’s replicator initiative aims for mass deployment of AI-enabled autonomous vehicles by 2026

The Pentagon has accelerated AI integration in military operations, aiming to deploy thousands of cost-effective autonomous vehicles by 2026 under the Replicator initiative. Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks emphasises the need for innovation in small, smart, and affordable platforms. While concerns about funding persist, the move raises questions about the maturity and trustworthiness of AI technology, especially in potential weaponized systems, as the era of fully autonomous lethal weapons approaches, ABC news reported.

2. Spain’s AI sensation: Aitana, the virtual model, earns up to €10,000 monthly

Spain’s first AI model, Aitana, is making headlines, not for her looks, but her nonexistent reality. Created by designer Ruben Cruz and The Clueless agency, Aitana was born out of the need to overcome influencer-related challenges. Cruz emphasised the desire for independence, stating, “We unintentionally created a monster.” According to a report by Euro news, Aitana, representing a sports supplement company, earns up to €10000 monthly on platforms like Fanvue.

3. AI robots revolutionise Japanese agriculture, easing labour shortages in smart farms

AI-based robots are revolutionising Japanese agriculture, particularly in large-scale greenhouse farming. Developed by startup Agrist, these robots use cameras and AI to identify the perfect time to harvest crops. Takamiya No Aisai, a farm in Saitama Prefecture, leased Agrist’s cucumber harvester, which accurately recognizes ripe cucumbers and cuts them off every two minutes. This innovation addresses labour shortages, marking a transformative shift in the future of agricultural production, according to a Japanese Times report.

4. California Governor advocates statewide GenAI training to navigate shifting job landscape

California Governor Gavin Newsom emphasises the urgency of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) training for residents. The report proposes providing educational opportunities to state government workers, aligning skills with the evolving GenAI landscape. Addressing the potential impact on jobs, the initiative aims to prepare the workforce for the GenAI economy, citing Goldman Sachs’ forecast of 300 million jobs worldwide affected. Education initiatives are recommended to start at higher education institutions and vocational schools, Cointelegraph reported.

5. Google Dream Track: AI-powered music for YouTube shorts with artist collaborations

Google’s Dream Track for Shorts, a collaboration between YouTube, Google’s DeepMind AI lab, and renowned artists like Charlie Puth and John Legend, introduces AI-generated music for YouTube Shorts. Users can select unique tracks by specifying themes like “Upbeat acoustic song” or “Intense jazz-infused R&B,” adding a creative touch to their content. With a vast music catalogue and artist partnerships, Google aims to set YouTube apart in the realm of AI-powered music for short-form videos, according to a Moneycontrol report.
