Google has launched the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones calling them the first smartphones for the generative AI era. The smartphones are powered by the company’s latest custom silicon chip: Tensor G3 that, Google claims, provides on-device machine learning and brings Google AI research directly to Pixel phones.

According to Google, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are capable of handling 150 times more complex models as compared to Pixel 7.

“Today, our growing family of Pixel devices is a culmination of our latest innovations across premium hardware, helpful software and state-of-the-art AI research,” said Rick Osterloh, senior vice president, devices & services.

Advances in speech and language: Google said that Tensor G3 offers better speech and natural language understanding – at par with “server-quality natural language understanding”. Users will be able to talk to Google Assistant more effortlessly – at their own pace – and use the same text-to-speech model that Google uses in data centres.

AI treatment for photos and videos: Google has optimised the camera pipeline and built machine learning algorithms directly into the silicon for higher details in Live-HDR capable capturing, with improved colours, contrast and dynamic range to videos on Pixel 8 smartphones.

Updated Magic Eraser: Google says Pixel 8 smartphones can remove larger distractions with on-device models for higher-quality photos.

Best Take feature: This feature ‘advanced machine learning models on-device’ to combine multiple images.

Audio Magic Eraser: The feature will reduce distracting sounds in your videos.

Magic Editor: Google announced Magic Editor that uses generative AI to make complex edits, like resize or reposition a subject. It also offers contextual suggestions to improve the lighting and background.

Zoom Enhance: Coming later to Pixel 8 Pro, Zoom Enhance uses generative AI to ‘intelligently fill’ in the gaps between pixels and predicts fine details.
