Overall, we feel confident in saying that Galaxy Z Fold 5 is likely the best folding smartphone in the market right now. And a lot of it has to do with not adding major upgrades, as counterintuitive as it may sound. Yeelight Cube Clock Kit Review with Matter and HomeKit

I have become a massive fan of all things retro in recent years. I love the Tidbyt clock. I am ready for Apple to bring the iPod back. Old stuff is back. I’ve recently been testing a really fun Tidbyt alternative with HomeKit support. It doesn’t have near the third-party app options, but it’s still a great desk accessory. I am looking at the Yeelight Cube Clock Kit this week.

HomeKit Weekly is a series focused on smart home accessories, automation tips and tricks, and everything to do with Apple’s smart home framework.

While Yeelight markets the kit as a retro clock, that’s just one of the ways you can use it. It’s one of the easiest ways to understand what this device is for, but it can be used in countless ways. Out of the box, there is also a YouTube subscriber tracker and a Twitch follower tracker. You can also leverage community-built options and build your own as well. Every pixel in each cube is customizable, so the possibilities for what to build are endless. As a desk accessory, I love it as a simple clock with a retro style.

Unboxing and setup for Yeelight Cube Clock

You’ll have several panels to unbox depending on which Yeelight kit you buy. I had the main lamp and then four extension models for my purposes. You’ll start with the main lamp for your unboxing. The bottom part of the kit has the Matter code on it. You’ll plug it up to power, then use the Yeelight Station app to connect it to your Wi-Fi. You can start stacking the extensions on the base and end with the main lamp at the other end. Depending on whether you set it up vertically or horizontally, you’ll need to configure that setting in the Yeelight app. From there, you can start enjoying all the Yeelight Clock offers.

I think it would be enough if you could only use the retro clock portion of the Yeelight Cube Clock. It just makes for a nice desk or counter accessory. You can then choose a YouTube or Twitch account to swap between the clock and your subscriber count. I wish you could set it to cycle through different bits of information versus choosing just one. From there, you can also pick between Yeelight’s prebuilt ambiance options and join the community to download submitted ones. The community option is great, but I hope to see more options.

I think the one thing missing from the Yeelight Cube Clock is the ability to pull from external data sources and feeds. Like the Tidbyt, I wish the Yeelight clock could pull in calendars, stocks, sports, etc. It’s so close to being perfect, so I am hopeful Yeelight will expand the options in the future.

Wrap-up

Because so much of the Yeelight Cube Clock is built for customizing the display, the HomeKit support is basic, but it does work. It’ll function as an on/off switch for the display. If you’re using it on your desk, my recommended automation would be to set the display to turn on first thing in the morning but then turn off at night. If you’re using it on your nightstand, you can also customize the brightness within HomeKit. Overall, it’s a fun device that I hope expands with additional information sources.

OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R Colour, RAM, Storage Options for India Leak Online

OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R are all set to hit the Indian market on January 23. Ahead of the launch, a new leak has surfaced online hinting at their colour, RAM, and storage options. The OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R are said to come with up to 16GB RAM. The former could pack up to 512GB of onboard storage, while the OnePlus 12R might include up to 256GB of storage. The OnePlus 12 is already available in China. It runs on Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC and is backed by a 5,400mAh battery with 100W wired SuperVOOC charging support.

Tipster Ishan Agarwal (@ishanagarwal24) claimed on X that the Indian variant of the OnePlus 12 will come in 12GB + 256GB, 16GB + 512GB RAM and storage options and Flowy Emerald and Silky Black colour options. The OnePlus 12R is tipped to debut in 8GB + 128GB, 16GB + 256GB RAM and storage configurations. It is said to be available in Cool Blue and Iron Gray shades.

OnePlus has already announced that the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R will be launched at the ‘Smooth Beyond Belief’ event in New Delhi on January 23.

The OnePlus 12 was launched in China earlier this month with an initial price tag of CNY 4,299 (roughly Rs. 50,700) for the base 12GB RAM + 256GB storage configuration. It is available in Pale Green, Rock Black, and White hues. The phone runs on Android 14-based ColorOS 14 and sports a 6.82-inch quad-HD+ (1,440 x 3,168 pixels) LTPO OLED screen with up to 120Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 4,500 nits. Meanwhile, the OnePlus 12R is anticipated to arrive as an affordable version of the OnePlus 12. It could run on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. It is tipped to come with a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. 1. Keep Alexa away from your toilet

Placing an Echo near your toilet is, quite simply, gross. Think of all the germs that linger around that area — even in super-clean bathrooms. However, if you must have an Echo device in your bathroom (and, OK, we can see the appeal), try placing it as far away from the toilet as possible.

If you can, mount it on a wall with a sticky strip or a nail. Just make sure it’s secure so it doesn’t fall, and remember to place it near an outlet so you can plug it in. Also, keep it away from the bathtub (duh!). You wouldn’t want to fry your Echo.

2. Avoid putting Alexa near a sink

If you’re trying to drown out the sounds of Alexa’s voice, then, by all means, place your expensive Echo by a sink. However, if you want to keep it intact, never place it anywhere near water.

You don’t want to risk your kitchen water sprayer going haywire and soaking your Echo device, or a tall device getting tipped into the sink. Instead, place it on a different counter, like a kitchen island, or tuck it into a corner where it’s farther from splattering spaghetti sauce and water spray. It’ll stay cleaner and might sound better, too.

3. Don’t put Alexa by your windows

Keep your Echo away from all the windows in your house. The location could potentially give anyone from the outside access to your Echo, and that could give access to your other smart home devices. For example, if your car is connected to your smart speaker, someone may be able to unlock and start it.

4. Alexa shouldn’t go under your TV

How many commercials are out there that say, “Alexa, play…” and activate your Echo? Or if the TV says anything that sounds a lot like “Alexa,” take a guess at what’s going to activate.

Not only does this interrupt the show you’re watching, but it also starts recording what’s said after the command. So if you’re having a private conversation and Alexa kicks in, you’re risking your privacy. Placing it on a side table makes more sense and is more likely to keep the voice assistant quiet until you make a command.
