If you already own a motorized garage opener, even one with a belt drive opener or a chain drive, you can use one of the easy add-on accessories above for smart garage door control. If you’re in the market for a whole new opener mechanism and you want a smart device, you can find smart opener and door sensor options from makers such as Chamberlain, LiftMaster and Ryobi.Smart garage door controllers come in a few variations. In general, a control attaches to your existing opener with a double-sided adhesive strip. In most cases, you’ll need to attach two small wires to the open and close command nodes on your existing garage door opener.
Smart garage kits also typically include some type of sensor to attach to your garage door. This sensor detects and transmits your garage door status, so the control accurately knows whether the door is open, closed or somewhere in between, and with the garage door opener app, can send you a push notification if your garage is open when it shouldn’t be. It also usually serves as a safety sensor.
The ability to connect to a Wi-Fi signal is key to ensuring your new smart garage door and remote control work the way you want them to. On the smart side, an add-on controller connects to your Wi-Fi network, which is easy enough. You’ll need a strong 2.4GHz internet connection that reaches your garage. Typically, a corresponding app will walk you through adding your device to the network, as well as the general installation.
Garage door opener app features and smarts differ from brand to brand. One app may offer geofencing, scheduling, remote access and voice control, while another app may just make your smartphone a duplicate of your garage door controller.
Deciding which controller is the best smart garage door opener for you comes down to what control features you want most and what smart home platforms you use in your home (such as Amazon Alexa, Google Home or Apple HomeKit). No matter your requirements, there’s likely a smart garage door opener and app out there to meet your needs.
In a groundbreaking development, Ahmedabad has emerged as the first city in India to employ artificial intelligence (AI) for comprehensive monitoring by the municipal corporation and police across the entire city. The city’s expansive Paldi area is now home to a state-of-the-art artificial intelligence-enabled command and control centre, featuring a remarkable 9 by 3-metre screen that oversees an extensive 460 square kilometres, encompassing Ahmedabad and its surroundings. This AI-surveillance system incorporates live drone footage, camera feeds from traffic signals and buses, offering a six-camera view that surveys the entire city.
AI’s Role in Real-time Monitoring and Analysis
According to the CNBC Awaaz, the system’s capabilities extend beyond tracking traffic violations or unidentified activities; it has the ability to monitor and address various issues. Whether it’s locating missing persons, or identifying suspicious activities, this AI-driven system is set to become a boon for both the municipal corporation and the police.
The role of AI in this system is pivotal, as it analyses the incoming footage in real-time. From live footage analysis to sifting through hours of recorded footage to find relevant information, AI handles these tasks efficiently.
The integrated use of drones facilitates surveillance, helping identify issues such as illegal parking, stalls, garbage accumulation, and other civic problems. The combination of drone footage and AI analysis enables the prompt identification and resolution of these issues.
Where it has already made a difference
One notable instance is the effective management of stray animals in Ahmedabad. The AI control room played a crucial role in addressing the issue, as stray animals were identified, captured, and subsequently returned to their owners. The AI-backed system also facilitated quick responses to incidents, ensuring timely actions and, in some cases, penalties for offenders.
Ahmedabad residents have reported feeling safer and have noticed improvements in traffic management and overall cleanliness since the implementation of this AI-monitored system. The city serves as a beacon of progress, showcasing how technology, specifically AI, can contribute to the development and safety of urban areas. As Ahmedabad leads the way, it is anticipated that other cities across India will follow suit, embracing similar innovative solutions in the days to come.

Asteroid today: You may think asteroids are simply floating rocks in space but they can also present a danger to Earth. Due to close calls with asteroids, NASA, ESA, and other space agencies have developed technology to track these space rocks in their orbits, and even deflect them in case a potential impact scenario develops. Using its tech, NASA has now shed light on an asteroid that is expected to pass Earth today, January 2. Know all about the close approach by this Asteroid today.
Asteroid 2023 YR: Speed, size, distance, and more
The asteroid, designated as Asteroid 2023 YR is expected to pass Earth at a distance of approximately 1.7 million kilometers today, according to the NASA Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS). It is already travelling towards Earth in its orbit at 44002 kilometers per hour which is even faster than Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs)! This space rock belongs to the Apollo group of Near-Earth Asteroids, which are Earth-crossing space rocks with semi-major axes larger than Earth’s.
It belongs to the Aten group of asteroids, which are Earth-crossing Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs) with semi-major axes smaller than Earth’s. They are named after the asteroid 2062 Aten and the first of its kind was discovered by American astronomer Eleanor Helin at Palomar Observatory on January 7, 1976.
According to NASA, this is not the first time that Asteroid 2023 YR has come close to Earth. It first passed the planet on September 11, 1991, at a distance of approximately 14 million kilometers. After today, it will pass the planet at a distance of 59 million kilometers on September 11, 2029, at approximately 15 million kilometers.
How big is it?
Asteroid 2023 YR is almost the size of an aircraft, with a width of nearly 120 feet! However, it has not been classified as a Potentially Hazardous Object and does not pose a danger to Earth.

The Pixel Buds Pro represented a major leap forward for the Google Pixel Bud family, delivering high-end features like ANC and IPX4 water resistance. We had a lot of positive things to say about Google’s flagship true wireless earbuds, but that’s not to say they were perfect. Below is my wishlist for what I’d like to see from the Google Pixel Buds Pro 2.
Contents
A better fit would go a long way
Lily Katz / Android Authority
It doesn’t matter how great a pair of earbuds is if they don’t fit comfortably. While the Pixel Buds Pro earbuds are reasonably comfortable, a common complaint is that they always feel a bit loose. Google offers three different earbud tips, but no matter which one you use, you’ll never achieve as snug a fit as with other headphones.
Some ear shapes may struggle with the buds falling out, but for most, they just feel a bit loose. Google needs to address this design flaw with the Pixel Buds Pro 2. Considering that other Pixel Buds models haven’t had this issue, we would expect this to be an easy fix.
Transparency mode could use improvements
Ryan Haines / Android Authority
The inclusion of a transparency mode is awesome, and for the most part it works fine, but it falls short of the natural, airy sensation you’d get with something like the AirPods Pro. What’s currently hindering transparency mode? It’s likely due to the absence of the spatial vent found on other Pixel Buds, which allows more natural, ambient sound to come through.
A straightforward solution would be for Google to redesign its Pixel Buds Pro 2 to be more in line with other models. The earbud’s fit and its transparency mode have both been compromised with the current design, indicating a clear need for a change.
Support for aptX and other missing codecs
Ryan Haines / Android Authority
The Google Pixel Buds Pro supports only AAC and SBC for Bluetooth codecs, lacking other advanced codecs. This absence is particularly notable for earbuds priced around $200, as most competitors in this range offer at least aptX or LDAC support.
For the Pixel Buds Pro 2, Google needs to embrace other advanced codecs to give consumers more options, with aptX being a minimum expectation.
Improved mic
While the Pixel Buds Pro has decent microphones that work well in ideal conditions, they struggle in noisy environments with noise rejection. You’ll find it will work fine in Zoom meetings or while having a quick chat, but it will perform less admirably in a chaotic office.
True wireless earbuds are often popular choices for a jog or a run, but the Buds Pro isn’t so great here if you plan on taking a call outside. Wind noises will get in the way, and for those with higher voices, you’ll likely have whole sections of your voice drop off.
The Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 should improve noise rejection and audio quality with its mic to ensure it lives up to the Pro name.
A lower price tag would be nice
Rita El Khoury / Android Authority
The Google Pixel Buds Pro initially retailed for $199.99 but haver seen frequent sales, dropping to as low as $120 during the holiday season. While these discounts are appealing, Google overpriced the earbuds to begin with. When the Pixel Buds Pro came out, they were considered a tad expensive by many reviewers when comparing their feature set to other earbuds around the same price range.
There’s a recurring pattern of Google reducing prices shortly after product launches, a practice that can be perceived as price-gouging against us early adopters. A good example is its Pixel phones, which often launch at one price only to be cut back by as much as hundreds within a few months. We’ve seen similar practices with its smart home products, too.
To be fair, Samsung and others also have price cuts, but usually, they are not as substantial until very close to the end of a generation’s life. Google tends to cut pricing by as much as a quarter within the first half of a product’s lifecycle. Just give us a low price to begin with!
I’d like to see the Pixel Buds Pro 2 get a bit more aggressive to win over more fans to its audio products, pricing it around say $150-$175. This might tempt those of us who have become aware of Google’s sales tactics into buying sooner. More sales at launch means more exposure by word of mouth and so forth.
Will there be a Google Pixel Buds Pro 2?
Lily Katz / Android Authority
Google Pixel Buds Pro — July 28, 2022
The Google Pixel Buds series has had a somewhat mixed reception. Google doesn’t give solid numbers on how products like these perform, but the headphones seem to have a small and growing fanbase.
While it seems unlikely that Google will exit the audio space immediately, they have a history of axing products that don’t do as well as they initially hoped. For that reason alone, all I can say the Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 are likely but not guaranteed. Predicting when they might arrive is even harder, though.
As for the Pixel Buds Pro 2 release date? We’re likely a long way off. Looking back at the company’s history, it’s hard to draw firm conclusions but we can at least attempt. The company originally released the Pixel Buds in October 2017 and followed it up with a second-generation model in October 2019. Since then, there hasn’t been a new model under the Pixel Buds brand directly. There was a mid-range Pixel Buds A Series in June 2021 and the Pro version a year later in May 2022. Given this pattern, it’s plausible that Google will unveil a new audio product in 2024, as they typically release something every two years. The nature of this release is less certain. It could be a follow-up to the Pixel Buds A Series, Pixel Buds 3, or another Pro variant.
While 2024 is a possibility, 2025 might be a more likely timeframe unless Google ends up releasing more than one model at the same time.
Should you wait for the Google Pixel Buds Pro 2?
Lily Katz / Android Authority
The Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 are only a year old and can now be found on sale for well under $150. If you are a Pixel fan and want to get the buds for better brand consistency, there’s no reason to wait out for the next Pixel Buds model. Yes, there might be something in 2024, but it may be a more mid-range option.
Active noise-cancelling • Android integration • Google Assistant features
The Pixel Buds Pro introduce ANC to the series
The Google Pixel Buds Pro are the first in the line to offer active noise canceling. Obviously, they also have tight integration with Android and tons of support for Google Assistant commands, including the popular translation features.
The only exception is if there’s a feature you really want that isn’t available on the Pixel Buds Pro. If you aren’t impressed by the Buds Pro, you could wait until mid-2024 and see if Google’s next buds address the problem. Of course, it’ll likely be mid-range hardware, and so even if it improves fit, pricing, and other factors — it’ll also be missing some of the improved Pro features.
Don’t mind shopping outside of Camp Google? For those looking for a similar experience and cost, the most obvious alternatives to the Pixel Buds Pro are the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro ($179 at Amazon), which cost around $179 retail and can be found for a little less during the holidays. You’ll get better audio codec support and a better fit, though some of their best features are exclusive to Samsung phone owners.
If you don’t mind spending a bit more, the Sony WF-1000XM5 ($298 at Amazon) or 2nd gen Apple AirPods Pro ($199 at Amazon) are also easy recommendations.

In a holiday twist, an Apple AirTag proved to be more than just a nifty gadget to locate car keys as it helped a family track down stolen luggage and the thief responsible in North Carolina. The Gavino family from Miami, Florida, had taken off on a dream Christmas celebration in the Carolinas but faced an unexpected setback upon landing at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. After discovering that one of their bags had gone missing from the airport carousel, the Gavinos turned to a recently purchased tool for help. Catherine Gavino had equipped each bag with an AirTag, not anticipating that it would become a crucial asset in recovering stolen items. Little did she know, the decision would soon lead them on a hot chase after the luggage thief.
Apple AirTag on the Trail
Using the Find My app on her iPhone, Catherine tracked the stolen bag’s movement along Interstate 85, heading west toward Gastonia. Renting a vehicle, the family embarked on a pursuit, bringing them to a neighborhood. However, the search hit a temporary halt when the AirTag stopped providing information, according to The Queen City News report.
Undeterred, the Gavino family resumed their quest on Christmas Day, pinpointing the missing suitcase to a house on McGuire Street in Gastonia. Catherine promptly alerted the police after driving by the location. Law enforcement entered the premises and successfully recovered not only the Gavino family’s luggage but also another suitcase stolen from the airport.
While the stolen bag was retrieved, the contents were unfortunately missing, likely sold by the thief. Despite this setback, the police arrested a suspect charged with multiple theft crimes and a drug offense, held on a $10,000 bail. Catherine Gavino expressed her determination, stating, “I wanted justice.”
The incident highlights the effectiveness of AirTag as a tracking device and its role in aiding law enforcement. As the Gavino family experienced the ups and downs of their holiday adventure, the episode serves as a testament to the value of innovative technology in unexpected situations.
Apple AirTag Price
Apple continues to offer individual AirTag trackers for $29, with a set of four available for $99, providing users with a tool that goes beyond everyday utility. Additional accessories, including key rings, are available through the online Apple Store, where customers can also enjoy free engraving on their AirTag purchases.
In his weekly column, our Senior Editor of Wearables and Fitness Michael Hicks discusses the world of smartwatches, apps, and fitness tech related to running and health, in his quest to get faster and more fit (and help you do the same).
As 2023 comes to a close and everyone pretends January is the perfect time to start getting fit, I’m already thinking ahead to what next year has in store for us, from upcoming 2024 smartwatches to the software and sensors our favorite brands will stick inside them.
All things considered, 2023 was a very strong year for wearables. The Pixel Watch 2 came into its own as a Wear OS/ Fitbit hybrid, while Samsung played it safe with performance upgrades and Apple got people excited with gesture controls.
On the fitness side, Garmin put out some of its strongest-ever watches like the Forerunner 965 and Venu 3, while competitors like COROS and Polar held their own. Despite Fitbit’s struggles to regain its momentum and redesign its app, it did at least launch the solid Fitbit Charge 6, which I reviewed highly.
Still, we can certainly hope for newer and greater things this year. The AI craze will almost certainly come for this year’s watches, smart rings will jump into the public eye — with or without Samsung — and we have to assume some new health sensor tricks will make their way to mainstream brands.
Here’s everything I expect to see, or want to see, out of smartwatches and other wearables in 2024!
Contents
AI on your wrist
(Image credit: Nicholas Sutrich / Android Central)
I spoke to two wearable analysts about what to expect in 2024, and both independently brought up the same feature: on-device AIs.
“I think wearables will most likely start to take advantage of AI,” said Anshel Sag, principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy. As the AI chipsets get smaller, Sag “foresees a future where AI helps to enhance the wearable experience in ways that we’ve only wished could be possible.”
Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers, agreed that “the inclusion of AI in wearables” will drive sales to new heights in 2024.
He mentioned Apple’s gesture controls as an early example of its potential; next, AI will help offer “customized workouts or personalized nutrition plans” or tell you “the best time to have a cup of coffee is at 2 pm so you can have an optimal workout at 4 pm.”
One of the main upsides of a Garmin watch is its ability to tell you how tired or sore you are and adjust your daily workouts accordingly. If bigger watch brands can really turn to AI to offer this reliably, and without the hallucinations AI is prone to, that would be a major upside — one I’ve been hoping to see for some time!
Google can use Gemini for the Pixel Watch and lend it to Samsung, while some brands may want to partner with OpenAI or other brands. With Samsung turning the Galaxy S24 into an “AI phone,” maybe the Galaxy Watch 7 will be the company’s first “AI watch.”
The year of the smart ring?
(Image credit: Derrek Lee / Android Central)
I’ve tested dozens of smartwatches but have yet to wear my first smart ring. My colleagues who own the Oura Ring (Gen 3) swear by it, though, and other brands like Ultrahuman, RingConn, Circular, BoAt, and Noise have jumped into the fray this year.
All of these brands will try to strengthen their position before the Samsung Galaxy Ring launches; it’s currently rumored to arrive either in the summer of 2024 or early 2025, depending on how long it takes to get medical approval.
“Samsung’s entrance [to the smart ring market] would be huge because it’s a multinational brand with a very broad distribution network and plenty of marketing,” Ubrani explained, while most of its current competitors are “localized to a few countries around the world.”
He shared his team’s prediction for upcoming smart ring sales, which didn’t take Samsung into account, predicting worldwide sales will top one million units for the first time (a 16% increase) despite the lack of a “major” worldwide brand. With Samsung in the mix, that number could shoot up.
Sag suggested that while smart rings “solve a big problem with smartwatches” in terms of comfortable sleep tracking, he also thinks that “there’s still room for improvement in the form factor” and that they need to “get thinner and more sleek” before they start exploding in terms of sales.
A unified Wear OS ecosystem
(Image credit: Nicholas Sutrich / Android Central)
Moving on from what I expect to what I want to see, Google needs to make sure that Mobvoi, Fossil, and its other Wear OS partners aren’t left in the dust.
When Wear OS 3 launched in mid-2021, it came immediately to the Galaxy Watch 4 that summer. Then Fossil got Wear OS 3 in October 2022 and had to wait until mid-2023 to offer Google Assistant again. Mobvoi, meanwhile, has only just begun to roll out Wear OS 3 to its old watches as of December 2023, a year after the original promised date.
It’s clear that the old Snapdragon Wear hardware had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the Wear OS 3 era. But for current and future watches like the Ticwatch Pro 5 and Fossil Gen 7 — and new partners like Xiaomi returning to Wear OS — Google needs to do what it takes to clear the way for its partners to have easy updates so customers aren’t waiting years for new features.
Thus, 2024 is the time to show that unified front! While Google and Samsung jump to Wear OS 5 or 4.5, partners should at least be getting Wear OS 4, improving both software and overall performance.
A much better Pixel Watch 3
Android Central gave the Pixel Watch 2 our best smartwatch award of 2023, but that doesn’t mean it’s a perfect device. When I polled my coworkers about their wishes for upcoming 2024 smartwatches, most brought up things they want improved for the Pixel Watch 3.
In particular, they want better battery life, ideally matching with the 40-hour Galaxy Watch 6 or even longer with a “Pro” version. And so long as Google is only offering one size, they’d appreciate smaller display bezels, giving at least a 1.3-inch display on par with most rival watches.
What I find most intriguing comes from a 2023 Google patent showing a Pixel Watch with no crown. As you can see in the patent Figure above, it would have haptic sensors along the diameter of the watch. You’d be able to squeeze the Pixel Watch 3 from both sides to open a notification or pause a song. In another example, you’d slide your finger along the bottom to turn the volume up or down or tap a specific spot to turn on a widget.
I’m not sure how well this system would work in practice — it seems likely to have lots of false touches or misinterpreted gestures. But it’s still an intriguing idea that takes advantage of its soft-edged display and gives the Pixel Watch 3 a standout gimmick no other smartwatch could offer.
New health data to shake things up
(Image credit: Michael Hicks / Android Central)
Earlier this month, I wrote about how Rockley, a health-tracking company that’s partnered with “six out of the top 10 consumer device companies,” has a new sensor that uses infrared to get a better grasp of your current health than skin-level heart rate sensors can detect.
That technology will probably come to major smartwatch brands in the near future, if not during 2024. But I’ll be honest: I want something a little more exciting than just “more accurate health data,” and I suspect that applies to plenty of consumers.
Apple will allegedly add blood pressure monitoring and sleep apnea detection to the Series 10. Samsung has measured blood pressure for years and sleep apnea since late this year but hasn’t managed to get FDA approval for either. Maybe Apple entering the fray will help push Samsung to achieve the accuracy it needs.
Otherwise, well, I’ll go back to the AI point above. The first brand to offer something like “Apple Coach” or “Galaxy Coach” with training or recovery time suggestions — based on your fitness level, recent activities, and sleep data — would really impress everyday consumers with dreams of getting fitter or running their first 5K.
A Fitbit renaissance
(Image credit: Andrew Myrick / Android Central)
I’m worried about what Google has in store for Fitbit. We learned recently that Google had stopped selling Fitbit in dozens of countries, in order to align its sales with wherever it sells Pixel Watches. That, combined with the Pixel Watch 2 stealing the Fitbit Sense 2’s sensors, makes me wonder what the company’s plans are.
Based on Fitbit’s usual release calendar, we can expect a Fitbit Sense 3 or Fitbit Versa 5 launch in 2024. But what can they offer to drum up excitement? The Versa 4 and Sense 2 already added Google Maps and Wallet, the same as this year’s Charge 6, so it can’t just rely on the Google namesake this time.
Will Google give these new watches a Wear OS-lite experience with more third-party apps, as older Fitbits had? Or will Google and Fitbit work together on a more advanced version of Fitbit Premium, either relying on AI coaching or better at-home workout videos like Apple Fitness+? I’m not sure, but I do know that Google and Fitbit have to go all out this year to impress us.
Unpredictable excitement
(Image credit: Michael Hicks / Android Central)
I don’t know what will happen with the Galaxy Watch 7, Pixel Watch 3, Apple Watch Series 10, or other smartwatches that are sure to arrive in 2024. I’m sure they’ll be good like their predecessors, but which one comes out on top in the AI smartwatch wars will be fun to… well, watch!
I’m also curious what Garmin has in store for 2024. It made some of the best fitness watches of the year, but even so, I’ve already written about how some of its fitness features could use a revamp, as could the maze-like Garmin Connect app.
And I haven’t even touched on other devices in the wearables category, like smart glasses. Like smart rings, they’re still finding their niche but keep getting more and more popular year by year.
In other words, 2024 should be an exciting time for wearables, with developments we’ve never seen and make-or-break moments for some major brands.
