Apple starts paying compensation to users in ‘Batterygate’ settlement; iPhone owners get cheques

0
After reaching a $500 million settlement in 2020 to resolve a U.S. class action lawsuit related to the iPhone “batterygate” controversy, Apple is now making payments to those affected. The settlement, which brought an end to legal proceedings surrounding Apple’s efforts to manage the performance of older iPhone models, is finally reaching its resolution with cheques being issued to members over three years later.

Compensation Details and Eligibility Criteria

Agreed upon in May 2020, the settlement allowed affected owners of specific iPhone models to submit claims for compensation by October 6, 2020. According to the terms, Apple committed to a minimum payment of $310 million and a maximum of $500 million, contingent on the number of claims received.

Recent reports, including posts reported by MacRumors, reveal that owners who applied for the settlement are beginning to receive notifications about their payments. The images accompanying these reports indicate that the settlement payments amount to $92.17 per claim.

Eligible Devices and Consolidation of Cases

The list of eligible customers encompasses U.S. residents who owned an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, or an iPhone SE running iOS 10.2.1 or later. For the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, eligibility extended to those running iOS 11.2 or later before December 21, 2017.

This settlement addresses multiple identical cases consolidated in 2018, collectively referred to as Batterygate, where Apple faced accusations of violating various laws with its actions. The controversy stemmed from Apple’s introduction of an iOS feature in versions 10.2.1 and later, designed to temporarily throttle chips under heavy loads to mitigate the impact of aging iPhone batteries and prevent unexpected shutdowns.

Lawsuits argued that Apple failed to adequately inform users about the feature before implementation, leading to complaints of reduced hardware performance and suspicions of planned obsolescence. In response, Apple issued an apology to iPhone owners in 2017 and reduced the out-of-warranty battery replacement charge to $29 for affected users.

While the U.S. Batterygate lawsuit is concluding with payouts, Apple continues to grapple with similar challenges elsewhere. In May, the company attempted to thwart another Batterygate lawsuit in the UK, where plaintiffs are seeking $2 billion in damages from the tech giant.

Group representing TikTok, Meta, X sues US state over law limiting kids’ use of social media

0
A trade group representing TikTok, Snapchat, Meta and other major tech companies sued Ohio over a pending law that requires children to get parental consent to use social media apps. The law was part of an Ohio’s law — which requires social media companies to obtain a parent’s permission for children under 16 to sign up for social media and gaming apps — unconstitutionally impedes free speech and is overbroad and vague. The law also requires social media companies to provide parents with their privacy guidelines, so that families can know what content will be censored or moderated on their child’s profile.

“We at NetChoice believe families equipped with educational resources are capable of determining the best approach to online services and privacy protections for themselves,” Chris Marchese, director of the organization’s litigation center, said in a statement. “With NetChoice v. Yost, we will fight to ensure all Ohioans can embrace digital tools without their privacy, security and rights being thwarted.”

The group has won lawsuits against similar restrictions in California and Arkansas.

Husted, who leads Ohio’s technology initiatives and championed the law, called Friday’s lawsuit “cowardly but not unexpected.”

“In filing this lawsuit, these companies are determined to go around parents to expose children to harmful content and addict them to their platforms,” Husted said in a statement.

He alleged the companies know their algorithms are harming children “with catastrophic health and mental health outcomes.”

Kohler’s New Hand Shower Might Actually Turn Your Bathroom Into a Spa

0

Kohler is on a mission to make the bathroom a hot spot for cutting-edge technology. The luxury kitchen and bathroom company is always pushing the boundaries for what a trip to the toilet or shower can be. Today, ahead of next week’s CES show in Las Vegas, Kohler announced a lineup of fanciful bathroom toys that include a smart bidet seat attachment compatible with Alexa and Google Home (finally), a hand shower that shoots microbubbles and accommodates a range of cleansing attachments and it’s first-ever smart bathroom ceiling fan that measures temperature and humidity in the room and adjusts itself accordingly.

We’ll get to see Kohler’s lineup firsthand at CES next week. For now, here’s everything Kohler is unveiling to get your bathroom of the future, today.

SpaViva Handshower and Cleansing

<!–>

–>

Plenty of products claim to turn your shower into a “spa” but the Kohler SpaViva hand shower really might.

Kohler

This is the bathroom gadget I’m dying to try. Kohler’s new SpaViva combines custom spray technology and a built-in cleansing device to transform your morning spritz into something that sounds like a true spa treatment.

The hand shower pairs heat-retaining Katalyst spray with a microbubble spray that jets out bubbles 100 microns or smaller for a hydrofacial-style cleanse. Fixed to the hand shower is a cleansing device, with a rotating lineup of attachments including those for exfoliating, massaging and pumice scrubbing. All the attachments recharge through a magnetic dock.

The SpaViva starts at $249.

PureWash E930 bidet seat

The PureWash bidet seat offers all the luxury of a smart toilet without the exorbitant cost.

This is not Kohler’s first bidet seat attachment, but it is the first one that’s compatible with smart home assistants including Alexa and Google. Yes, now you can have your virtual assistant do all the, erm, dirty work. The PureWash features heated seats, adjustable water temperatures (ahhh) and pressure. It has a contactless opening in a slim, elongated design and is available in black or white for $2,149, which is a lot of money but still cheaper than most full smart toilets.

Voice activation via Alexa or Google Home allows hands-free control of the spray, dryer and UV cleaning systems for less points of contact and cleaner going experience.

Anthem Plus smart showering valves and controls

anthem shower control anthem shower control

Kohler’s Anthem spa shower control saw some key feature updates in 2024.

Kohler

An update to Kohler’s shower spa command center includes an integrated digital control system that allows customized delivery of water, light, sound and steam. A touchscreen enables you to preset multisensory shower experiences. All of this can be controlled through the Kohler Konnect app so you can curate the perfect shower before you’ve even dropped trou.

The smart shower controller starts at $2,800.

Atmo smart fan

smart fan smart fan

Kohler’s Atmo smart bathroom fan ($266) detects temperature and moisture and jumps into action accordingly.

Kohler

Atmo is Kohler’s first foray into the fan category. These smart ceiling fans measure temperature and humidity to automatically turn on when humidity is high. You can also set custom preferences for default fan speed, lighting brightness, color temperature and more. It retails for a surprisingly reasonable $266.

Kohler will also feature an expanded range of smart toilets at this year’s show including new variations of Numi 2.0, Innate and Veil, as well as 2023 CES Innovation Award honoree, Stillness Bath.

Aditya-L1 mission a huge success! ISRO spacecraft to watch Sun reaches parking spot

0
After the Chandrayaan-3 mission success (landing a craft on moon’s south pole last year), the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has done the nation proud again by ensuring a resounding triumph in yet another on of its endeavours – the Aditya-L1 mission! ISRO just revealed that the Aditya-L1 spacecraft has reached Lagrange 1 (L1) point, which was its designated parking space. In effect, Aditya-L1 mission has reached its destination quite successfully and without a glitch.

Aditya-L1 mission objective

Aditya-L1 spacecraft is on a solar observation mission. Aditya-L1, which took off in September 2023 to dig deep into the sun’s working, reached a point 1.5 million kilometers (932,000 miles) from Earth, according to ISRO on Saturday after it gave it some last minute instructions to effect some manoeuvres. The location is a fraction of the 150 million kilometer distance between Earth and the sun.

With the Chandrayaan-3 mission, ISRO landed a spacecraft near the moon’s south pole in 2023 and it came just after Russia’s attempt at a lunar touch down in the same area ended in failure following an engine malfunction.

The Indian Space Research Organisation is working on other projects including a human spaceflight program that aims to launch astronauts into orbit for the first time possibly by 2025. It is called the Gaganyaan mission.

“It is a testament to the relentless dedication of our scientists in realising among the most complex and intricate space missions,” PM Modi said of Aditya-L1 on social media platform X. “I join the nation in applauding this extraordinary feat. We will continue to pursue new frontiers of science for the benefit of humanity.”

How to enable Stolen Device Protection feature on your iPhone

0

Apple has introduced a valuable security feature with the iOS 17.3 beta – Stolen Device Protection for iPhones. This feature safeguards your device in the unfortunate event of theft. In this how-to article, we’ll explore the steps to turn on iPhone Stolen Device Protection and provide some insights on whether you should utilize this feature. Why Stolen Device Protection?
This security measure was introduced following an investigation by WSJ’s Joanna Stern, revealing a surge in iPhone thefts, especially in public places. Attackers observed victims entering passcodes before stealing their iPhones, changing Apple ID passwords, and locking owners out of their accounts. Stolen Device Protection addresses this issue by requiring biometric authentication outside trusted locations, adding an extra layer of security.

Should you enable the Stolen Device Protection feature on your iPhone?

Yes. Stolen Device Protection feature enhances security with minimal impact on user experience. Even if Face ID or Touch ID fails, you can still use your device for basic functions. Sensitive actions like changing Apple ID passwords or passcodes will be restricted, providing a secure environment. Here’s how to enable Stolen Device Protection

  1. Check that your iPhone has the iOS 17.3 beta update.
  2. Go to the Settings app.
  3. Select the Face ID & Passcode (or “Touch ID & Passcode”) option.
  4. Tap Activate Protection under the Stolen Device Protection option.

That’s it! Your iPhone is now equipped with Stolen Device Protection. In the rare event that Face ID or Touch ID malfunctions, you can still use your passcode to disable Stolen Device Protection when at a trusted location. This flexibility ensures that your device remains accessible even in unexpected situations.

Conclusion
By following these simple steps, you can enhance the security of your iPhone with Stolen Device Protection, providing peace of mind in case of theft or unauthorized access.

Indian Police Force Trailer Drops: Sidharth Malhotra, Shilpa Shetty, Vivek Oberoi Play Fearless Cops

0
Indian Police Force trailer has finally been released by Amazon Prime Video. The trailer for the first season of the series, billed as the next chapter in the Cop Universe, begins with a Delhi Police official addressing his team about a terrorist attack in the markets of Delhi and chalking out a plan to catch the perpetrators. Meanwhile, as the disturbing news comes up that the attacks are not likely to stop at Delhi, panic broils. The three-minute-long trailer gives plenty of glimpses of bomb blasts, police chases, action sequences, and a sense of urgency and loss.

Sidharth Malhotra plays a Special Cell officer from Delhi Police hell-bent on catching the terrorists, putting a stop to their nefarious plans and seeking justice — even if it requires him to break a rule or two. His approach doesn’t seem to sit quite well with Shilpa Shetty Kundra’s character, who is a senior police officer in the story. Playing other pivotal roles are Vivek Oberoi, Shweta Tiwari, Nikitin Dheer, Rituraj Singh, Mukesh Rishi, and Lalit Parimoo.

The high-octane action drama belongs to Rohit Shetty’s Cop Universe, which also has Singham Againslated for release later this year. Although none of the protagonists from the franchise can be seen in the trailer, Rohit Shetty’s signature larger-than-life action sequences with cars blowing up like pieces of Lego are very much there.

Indian Police Force is a tribute of sorts to the contribution of dedicated Indian police officers working against the odds. The seven-part series is another Amazon Original and will premiere January 19, a week before Republic Day.

The series has been primarily shot in Maharashtra, Goa, Delhi and Greater Noida. It also marks Rohit Shetty’s debut in the digital streaming space. While Sidharth Malhotra will be essaying the role of a cop for the first time, he has done his fair share of patriotic cinema, with Shershaah— which was also an Amazon Original — being his biggest hit in the genre to date.

He’ll again be donning the hat of a dedicated nation-loving soldier in Yodha, in which he’ll be seen rescuing the passengers of a hijacked plane, fighting terrorists, and devising a survival strategy after the plane’s engine dies.

Google Restricts Downloads of Airalo, Holafly in India for Not Complying With DoT Policy: Report

0
Google has restricted access to the apps of international eSIM providers Airalo and Holafly for users in India for not complying with existing telecom policies in the country, according to a report. The blocking of the apps, that provide access to SIM cards that provide access to calling and data while traveling to various countries, was reportedly done in compliance with directions issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to both Google and Apple. The latter is yet to block downloads of both apps in the country.

A Moneycontrol report citing unnamed sources states that Google has restricted downloads of Airalo and Holafly for users in India via the Google Play store, as both apps did not have the required No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the DoT to sell or rent international roaming SIM cards to users in the country. The DoT has reportedly directed Google and Apple to block downloads of the apps in India, as they lacked the requisite approvals to operate in the country.

Both Airalo and Holafly are currently unavailable in India

According to the DoT’s revised policy for the issue or renewal of NOCs for sale and rent of international roaming SIM cards or global calling cards for foreign operations in India that went into effect in January 2022, foreign operators must receive a NOC from the DoT in order to sell or rent international roaming SIM cards to customers in India. As per data available on the DoT’s website, 22 providers were granted an NOC as of September 30, 2023.

In order to receive an NOC from the DoT, providers must be registered as an Indian company and provide usage of the international cards outside India. They must also collect a copy of a user’s passport with the visa, proof of identity, and proof of address. They must also provide security agencies with a detailed monthly report complete with details of the customers who have been provided with SIM cards, as per the policy.

Gadgets 360 staff members were unable to download both Airalo and Holafly on an Android smartphone via the Google Play store, but the apps were still accessible via the App Store on iOS. A government source told Moneycontrol that discussions were ongoing with the iPhone maker in order to restrict access to both apps on the company’s smartphones in the country, which means the apps could be blocked at a later stage. Gadgets 360 has reached out to Google, Apple, and the DoT for comment and will update this article with their responses.
